Sony at CEDIA

Sept. 5, 2008 4:20pm

Sony just introduced an array of high-end home entertainment (flat LCD TVs, Blu-ray Disc player, AV receivers, etc.), VAIO computer high-definition and other products for the U.S. market at the Customer Electronics Design and Installation Association convention. One of our employee communications specialists, Gisela Pedroza, was on the scene in Denver and filed this report. By the way, I fully agree with her comment about the super-thin LCD television, which I also got a chance to check out while in Tokyo last week.

The Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association’s annual convention kicked off on Thursday, and though I didn’t have a measuring tape with me or a people counter, Sony not only had the largest exhibit - it also had the highest density of visitors. You almost couldn’t walk around the exhibit, with so many people cramming to see the latest Sony releases.

CEDIA brings together the people who make high-end homes electronically fabulous. Ever heard of systems that let you control the lighting, temperature, security system and entertainment systems around your house – oh, and the blinds too? From high-end televisions, audio systems and cabling, to television wall mount manufacturers - these are the type of companies showing at CEDIA.

Sony Offers Free Inspection and Repair for VAIO TZ Notebooks

Sept. 4, 2008 12:33pm

I wanted to let our readers know that today Sony made a global announcement that we will voluntarily inspect and service VAIO TZ notebook computers sold between July 2007 and August 2008. There have been reports that a few of these models have over heated due to irregularly placed wirers near the laptop hinge.

To address this issue, we are offering free inspections and free repairs. If you live in the U.S. and would like to have your TZ model checked out, please contact our customer support hotline at (888) 526-6219  to make the necessary arrangements. For all other questions about this matter, go to www.Sony.com/Support

If you are live outside the U.S., please visit the Sony customer support website in the region where you reside for directions specific to your part of the world.

Even if your TZ model is experiencing no unusual problems (as is the case for the vast majority of them), I would suggest that you call the hotline and/or
visit the website just to be on the safe side.

There’s Lots Cooking in Sony’s Kitchen

Sept. 3, 2008 12:40pm

Last week, the Consumer Electronics Association announced that Sir Howard Stringer, the chairman and CEO of Sony Corporation, will be the opening morning keynote speaker at the annual Consumer Electronics Show on Jan.8, 2009.

In connection with preparations for Sir Howard’s address, as well as planning for Sony’s press conference on the eve of the show on Jan. 7 and our actual CES exhibition on the floor of the Las Vegas Convention Center, three colleagues and I visited Japan last week to scope out the hot new technologies, products and other developments we might unveil at the show.

I realize this post is bit of a tease since I can’t reveal the news here, but I can certainly go ahead and offer a few clues. There’s definitely a lot going on in terms of new products, networked services, advanced technologies and environmental developments.

For example, my colleagues and I saw a variety of wireless-enabled devices that share content with one another.  We witnessed and learned about further advances with
OLED technology front. We had the chance to check out various kinds of 3-D experiences. We also learned about where the future of Blu-ray Disc technology might go as the world of high-definition media comes together with the networked entertainment world of the future.

LA Times Interview with Sony Electronics President & COO

Sept. 2, 2008 2:35pm

In a recent post I mentioned an interview Alex Pham, a consumer technology reporter for the Los Angeles Times, conducted with Stan Glasgow, our president and COO for U.S. electronics operations. Except for a opening inaccuracy about our sales volume (actually closer to $13 billion), the report is an enlightening Q&A about some key issues affecting the consumer electronics industry and our business. Check it out the interview here.

New Walkmans, New Features

Aug. 29, 2008 12:51pm

Hi. My name is Mitch Li and I’m the Senior Product Manager for Walkman players.

I just wanted to let you know that we just released three new Walkman lines this week, including a new version of our noise canceling Walkman that really improves on the last model (which is saying something since it received multiple Editor’s Choice awards). If you already have a great pair of noise canceling headphones (from Sony I hope), I think we still might have something in each of the new lines that might interest you.

The B series is a solid music player, with a number of features such as FM, voice and FM recording, as well as a bass boost button (think mobile electronics) and is great for someone new to digital music or for someone who wants an easy solution for the gym. With its compact size and quick charge feature (1.5 hours for a 3 minute charge), its pretty ideal for workouts, especially when paired with an armband and sports headphones.
