SXRD 4K Projector Debuts in DC

Government video users who are eager to experience the state-of-the-art in digital cinema projection - for either presentations or command and control applications - now have an opportunity to have an eye-opening experience in the nation's capital. The National Geographic Society has recently announced installation of one of the country's first Sony SXRD 4K projectors in its 408-seat Grosvenor Auditorium in Washington DC, which hosts more than 100 events a year, from film screenings to image-heavy lectures by top photographers, explorers, scientists and adventurers.

Sony has delivered more than 130 units of its Silicon X-tal Reflective Display (SXRD) 4K large-venue projector to a diverse line-up of customers in government, production, education and presentation applications.

Among the other installations is the new research headquarters of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) on the University of California San Diego campus, which also features a 4K projector used to display intricately detailed images at extremely high resolution, as part of several projects that bring together large groups of members of the scientific community to examine and visualize data sets in such fields as earth science or brain imaging.

Other recent customers include Sky-Scan, Inc., Full Throttle Films, Inc. (VER), Evans & Sutherland, and Landmark Graphics Corp., among many others. The Sony SXRD 4K projector is also increasing its penetration in the digital cinema market, and when combined with Sony's new media block and Screen Management System, the 4K technology creates a comprehensive DCI-compliant digital cinema system for exhibitors.

Currently, there are two models in the Sony SXRD projector line: the SRX-R110, a 10,000 ANSI* lumen model; and the SRX-R105, which features 5,000 ANSI lumens. In 2006, Sony also plans to introduce an 18,000 ANSI lumen version, intended for screen sizes of 50 feet (viewable area, measured diagonally) or more and designed specifically with the needs of exhibitors in mind for installation in commercial movie theaters.

That's because SXRD technology driving the Sony 4K projector was not only designed to deliver the finest digital cinema images but also be as flexible as possible," said John Kaloukian, director of marketing for display systems at Sony Electronics. "So whether it's used to display motion picture content in a theater or graphics for a lecture or presentation, people see the highest levels of resolution, image quality and contrast for an incredibly enhanced and dynamic viewing experience."

The Sony SXRD projectors are the first commercially available devices utilizing 4K technology and delivering a 4096 x 2160 pixel resolution-four times the pixel count of current high-definition televisions. Complementing the projector's pixel resolution is a high contrast ratio for deep blacks, outstanding picture uniformity and superb signal processing. The SXRD 4K technology is also capable of displaying multiple, full high-definition images in single-, dual- or quad-screen mode, making the projectors suited for multi-purpose use in theaters, as well as in lecture halls or auditoriums.

*ANSI lumen is a standard measuring method of the American National Standards Institute IT7.228. Since there is no uniform method of measuring brightness, specifications will vary among manufacturers.
