Sony Pictures Classics - 08/06/2021

The film made its world premiere at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival and stars Odessa Young, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Olivia Colman, Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù and Glenda Jackson

NEW YORK (August 6, 2021) – Sony Pictures Classics announced today that they will release MOTHERING SUNDAY, directed by Eva Husson (GIRLS OF THE SUN), in theaters on November 19 in New York and Los Angeles, before expanding to other markets in the following weeks.  The film received critical acclaim upon its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last month and will next make its North American premiere at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival in September.

Starring Odessa Young (ASSASSINATION NATION), Josh O’Connor (THE CROWN), Colin Firth (THE KING’S SPEECH), Olivia Colman (THE FAVOURITE), Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù (GANGS OF LONDON), and Glenda Jackson (WOMEN IN LOVE), the film is written by Alice Birch (NORMAL PEOPLE, SUCCESSION), who adapted the screenplay from Graham Swift’s provocative best-selling novella of the same name.

On a warm spring day in 1924, house maid and foundling Jane Fairchild (Odessa Young) finds herself alone on Mother’s Day. Her employers, Mr. and Mrs. Niven (Colin Firth and Olivia Colman), are out and she has the rare chance to spend quality time with her secret lover. Paul (Josh O’Connor) is the boy from the manor house nearby, Jane’s long-term love despite the fact that he’s engaged to be married to another woman, a childhood friend and daughter of his parents’ friends. But events that neither can foresee will change the course of Jane’s life forever.

Clips from the film are now available here.

MOTHERING SUNDAY was produced by Elizabeth Karlsen (CAROL) and Stephen Woolley (THE CRYING GAME) of Number 9 Films. It features costume design by three-time Academy Award® winner and 15-time nominee Sandy Powell (THE IRISHMAN, MARY POPPINS RETURNS), hair and make-up design by BAFTA® winner Nadia Stacey (THE FAVOURITE, CRUELLA), production design by BAFTA® TV nominee Helen Scott (A VERY ENGLISH SCANDAL, WUTHERING HEIGHTS), cinematography by BIFA nominee Jamie D.
