Sony Pictures Entertainment - 10/26/2021

NEW YORK (October 26, 2021) – Sony Pictures Classics announced today that they will now release MOTHERING SUNDAY, directed by Eva Husson (BANG GANG, GIRLS OF THE SUN), in theaters in New York and Los Angeles on February 25, 2022 before expanding to other markets over the following weeks. The film will also receive a one-week qualifying run at The Landmark in Los Angeles starting November 17, 2021, qualifying the film for all potential awards.

MOTHERING SUNDAY stars Odessa Young (SHIRLEY), Josh O’Connor (THE CROWN), Colin Firth (THE KING’S SPEECH), Olivia Colman (THE FATHER, THE FAVOURITE), Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù (GANGS OF LONDON), and Glenda Jackson (WOMEN IN LOVE), and is written by Alice Birch (NORMAL PEOPLE, SUCCESSION), who adapted the screenplay from Graham Swift’s provocative best-selling novella of the same name. The film received critical acclaim upon its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and has screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, the London Film Festival, and recently as the centerpiece at the Hamptons International Film festival, where it made its U.S. premiere.

On a warm spring day in England in 1924, house maid and foundling Jane Fairchild (Odessa Young) finds herself alone on Mother’s Day. Her employers, Mr. and Mrs. Niven (Colin Firth and Olivia Colman), are out and she has the rare chance to spend quality time with her secret lover. Paul (Josh O’Connor) is the boy from the manor house nearby, Jane’s long-term love despite the fact that he’s engaged to be married to another woman, a childhood friend and daughter of his parents’ friends. But events that neither can foresee will change the course of Jane’s life forever.
