How to troubleshoot the USBNTMAP.SYS, NTMAP.SYS, USBSTORE.SYS or USBMPHLP.PDR files missing from a VAIO® computer.

Applicable Products and Categories of This Article

These files are part of the Microsoft® Windows® Me, 2000 Professional, or XP operating system, and are usually added to the system when the operating system is installed. These files should be present on the hard drive of the computer, however, if they have not been extracted or installed, the operating system will not detect that the file is present and generate a missing file error.

If the error is generated when using a Sony® VAIO® computer, follow this procedure to resolve the missing files issue:

In the Add New Hardware Wizard window, type the appropriate path based on the operating system installed:

  • Microsoft® Windows® Me operating system: C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS
  • Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Professional operating system: C:\I386
  • Microsoft® Windows® XP operating system: C:\I386

NOTE: The paths listed above also can be used to install any additional components required by the operating system.

If the error is generated when using a Sony device with a computer made by another manufacturer, it may be possible to extract these files by directing the operating system to look in the C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS or C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\INSTALL directories. If the files are not found or do not install, contact the computer manufacturer for assistance.
