The camera still auto focuses even though it is set for manual focus.

Even when the camera is set to manual focus (MF) with the focus switch, it will still auto focus if the mode dial is set to AUTO or any of the Scene Selection modes. It is designed this way as a failsafe in case you forget to take the camera out of manual focus for a subject you want to shoot using auto focus. To use manual focus, turn the mode dial to either Program (P), Aperture Priority (A), Shutter Priority (S), or Manual Exposure (M).
