What is a Homegroup and how do I set it up?

The Homegroup is a simple way to network computers on a home network and share pictures, music, videos, documents and printers between the computers. A Home group requires a single password, making is easy to create and connect to a home network. Use the first procedure below to create a Homegroup, the second procedure to connect a computer to a Homegroup and the third procedure to access files over a Homegroup.

IMPORTANT:

  1. Follow the procedure below to create a Homegroup:
    1. Click the Start button and then click Control Panel.
    2. In the Control Panel window, click Network and Internet.
    3. In the Network and Internet window, click HomeGroup.
    4. In the HomeGroup window, click the Create a homegroup button. Image
    5. In the Create a Homegroup window, under Select what you want to share:, click to check the box next to the type of files you would like to share. Image
    6. Click the Next button.
    7. In the Create a Homegroup window, a password is displayed. Write down or print out the password because it is required to connect other computers to this Homegroup. Image
    8. Click the Finish button.

  2. Follow the procedure below to connect a computer to a Homegroup:
    1. Click the Start button and then click Control Panel.
    2. In the Control Panel window, click Network and Internet.
    3. In the Network and Internet window, click HomeGroup.
    4. In the HomeGroup window, click the Join Now button. Image
    5. In the Join a Homegroup window, under Select what you want to share:, click to check the box next to the type of files you would like to share. Image
    6. Click the Next button.
    7. In the Join a Homegroup window, under Type the password:, type the password displayed when you were creating the Homegroup. Image
    8. Click the Next button.
    9. In the You have joined the homegroup window, click the Finish button.

  3. Follow the procedure below to access files on another computer through a Homegroup:
    1. Click the Start button and then click Computer.
    2. In the Computer windows, in the left pane, click the arrow next to Homegroup to expand the selection. Image
    3. Under Homegroup, click the arrow next to the computer name on which you would like to access shared files.
    4. Under the selected computer name, navigate to and then click the folder that contains the files you would like to access.
    5. In the right pane, double-click the desired file to open it.
