What type of recording media can be used in Sony® consumer camcorders?

See the table below for a list of compatible recording media types for the different Sony camcorder formats.

Camcorder/Format General Information
8mm Only standard 8mm video cassettes should be used.
Hi8™ Any Hi8 video cassette can be used. Standard 8mm video cassettes can be used, however, the camcorder will only record in Standard 8 resolution using Standard 8mm video cassettes. A maximum resolution of 400 lines is possible when recording in Hi-8. A maximum resolution of 240 lines is possible when recording in Standard 8mm.
Digital8® Any Hi8 video cassette can be used. The use of Standard 8mm video cassettes in Digital8 camcorders will degrade overall video quality. Noise may appear when playing back tapes recorded on other devices in the Hi8 or standard 8mm system. You may not hear the recorded sound during play back in various modes.
Mini DV Any Mini DV video cassettes can be used including cassettes that have the built in memory chip. A maximum resolution of 500 lines is possible when recording to a Mini DV.
MD Discam® Only MD Data2 Minidiscs can be used. Standard audio Minidiscs do not have enough storage capacity and will not work in these cameras.
DVD Handycam® Sony 8cm recordable DVDs or discs marked with the for VIDEO CAMERA [FIG. 1] logo should be used.
