How to troubleshoot if a CD or DVD will not play in a car stereo.

Follow these steps to troubleshoot if a CD or DVD will not play in a car stereo.


  • Sony cannot guarantee playback when using CD-R discs recorded by a disc burner. Use a commercially-produced CD to troubleshoot using the steps below.
  • If model-specific information is needed to complete any of these steps, refer to the instructions supplied with the product. Manuals are posted on your model support page.
  1. Make sure the disc has been inserted properly.
  2. Attempt to play the disc.
  3. If the issue is not resolved, remove the disc from the player.
  4. Examine the disc for any fingerprints or smudges.
  5. Clean the disc using a soft, dry cloth. Image
  6. Properly reinsert the disc into the player.
  7. Attempt to play the disc.

    NOTE: Only press the PLAY button once, if the PLAY button is pressed more than once, the disc may stop playing. If the PLAY button is inoperable, service may be required.

  8. For disc players with a HOLD switch, move the switch to the OFF position.
  9. If the issue is not resolved, attempt to play another disc.

    NOTE: If the issue does not occur when playing the newly inserted disc, then the previous disc is faulty. Otherwise, continue with the troubleshooting steps below.

  10. Reset the player.

    NOTE: This issue can also be caused by condensation. If this may be the case, the car stereo should not be used for about an hour to allow to any condensation to dissipate.

If the issue is still unresolved, service may be required.
