How to improve the ability of the camera to focus on a subject in a dark environment.

Applicable Products and Categories of This Article

In order to achieve better focus in dark shooting environments, the AF Illuminator feature that is available on select Sony® cameras should be set to Auto.

IMPORTANT: For model-specific information and to check if your camera has an AF Illuminator feature, refer to the operating instructions supplied with the product. Manuals are posted on your model support page.

NOTES:

  • If the AF Illuminator light does not reach the subject sufficiently or the subject has no contrast, focus will not be achieved.
  • Focus can be achieved as long as the AF Illuminator light reaches the subject, even if the light is slightly off-center of the subject.
  • The AF Illuminator does not function on cameras with a Face Detection feature when Face Detection is set to On.
  • Although there are no safety issues, directly looking into the AF Illuminator light at close range is not recommended.
