What is the maximum length of cable that can be used to connect Audio/Video (A/V) products?

Applicable Products and Categories of This Article

It is difficult to give an exact number regarding the maximum cable length for connecting Audio/Video (A/V) products. The standard recommendation is to use the shortest length of cable possible since longer cables can diminish signal strength and quality. Although cable lengths of 3-6 feet are the most common, it may be possible to use longer lengths.

If using longer cables, it is better to use a cable with a low wire gauge rating (around 12-14 gauge) and one that provides shielding. Cables with low wire gauge ratings offer less signal resistance while the shielding will minimize interference.

IMPORTANT: Using cables longer than 30 feet in length may require a signal amplifier or repeater.
