IMPORTANT: The Handycam® Utility application is part of the Picture Motion Browser software. Before continuing with the troubleshooting steps below, first check the system requirements of your computer to make sure the necessary environment is available to properly support the software operation. See page 28 and page 29 of the Operating Guide for information.

Follow the steps below to troubleshoot the camcorder and computer connection:

  1. Turn off the camcorder.
  2. Ensure the Memory Stick PRO Duo™ media is inserted in the camcorder.
  3. Ensure the USB cable is securely connected to both the USB port on the computer and the Handycam Station.
  4. Turn on the camcorder.
  5. On the camcorder LCD screen, touch the COMPUTER icon.

NOTE: After the camcorder and computer establish a connection, a Removable Disk window showing the contents of the Memory Stick PRO Duo media may appear.

If the Handycam Utility application still does not start, check to see if the Picture Motion Browser Media Check Tool icon [FIG. 1] is showing on the tool bar of the computer desktop. If it is not showing, follow the steps below to enable it:

  1. Turn off the camcorder.
  2. Start the Picture Motion Browser software.

  6. Click the OK button.
  7. Close the Picture Motion Browser software.
  8. Turn on the camcorder.
  9. On the camcorder LCD screen, touch the COMPUTER icon.

NOTE: After the camcorder and computer establish a connection, a Removable Disk window showing the contents of the Memory Stick PRO Duo media may appear.

Finally, if the above steps still do not allow the Handycam Utility application to start automatically, it is possible the Memory Stick PRO Duo media may be missing the MSTK_PRO.IND and MEMSTICK.IND files. These files are required on the media in order for the software to start automatically. If they are missing, then the Memory Stick PRO Duo media may not have been formatted prior to use in the camcorder. To replenish these files, follow the steps below:

  1. Create a new folder on the computer desktop.
  2. If the Removable Disk window mentioned in the notes above did not appear, manually open it at this time; otherwise, skip this step.

  22. IMPORTANT: The Handycam Utility application should automatically start at this point. However, you first need to transfer the folders and files you just copied to the computer back to the Memory Stick PRO Duo media in the camcorder. Minimize the Handycam Utility window at this time.

  23. In the new folder , select the folders and files you previously copied.
  24. On the keyboard, press the CTRL+C keys to copy the folders and files.
