The camera is designed in auto mode with the flash to use a specific shutter speed and aperture setting based on firmware. The information that is passed by the flash to the camera is 'MODE' information such as flash auto, flash on, flash off, and Red Eye Reduction. The HVL-F1000 has a photocell sensor in the front that meters ambient light and allows for proper output in regards to exposure for the camera. If less or more flash is needed, the flash level in the camera menu provides options to compensate for this.
