Tips for shooting in the 3D Sweep Panorama™ mode

The 3D Sweep Panorama mode enables you to shoot 3D images that can be viewed on a 3D TV with a sense of depth.

Note: Requires a High-Speed HDMI® cable (at least 10.2 Gbps) and active 3D glasses sold separately.

    Determining the subject to shoot

The range of subjects that can be captured using the 3D Sweep Panorama mode depends on the image size selection. Select an image size that matches the scenery you intend to shoot.

To achieve 3D images that best convey a sense of depth, shoot the subject from a distance of 3 - 10m.

Depending on the subject, you may experience problems in terms of not capturing an entire image or achieving poor image results. See the examples below.

    • Subjects with extreme light-dark contrast
While panning the camera, recording may stop before the entire image has been captured.

    • Subjects with repeating patterns and little contrast
While panning the camera, recording may stop before the entire image has been captured.

    • Moving subjects
The camera may fail to capture the entire image, or portions of the image may be improperly stitched.

Note: The maximum angle that can be shot in the 3D Sweep Panorama mode is about 260° when using the SEL16F28 lens at the wide-angle setting

How to shoot a 3D Sweep Panorama image

Step 1 - Point the camera at the subject to adjust brightness and focus.

Step 2 - Keep the shutter button pressed down halfway (AF/AE lock) and point the camera at one edge of the subject to be shot.

Step 3 - Press the shutter button fully down, and pan the camera across the entire subject at a constant speed.

The following video clips show how to capture 3D images. Click the shutter button to view the videos.
    * The time shown in the video clips is for NEX-3 & NEX-5. It varies depending on the product.

Depending on the panning direction and the distance from the subject, you may experience poor image results.

The following techniques will enable you to achieve better results when using the 3D Sweep Panorama mode.

    • Operate the camera from a stable location.
    • Pan the camera across the subject steadily and at a constant speed.
    • Pan the camera horizontally. Panning the camera in a diagonal or up-down direction can cause distortion of the captured image or can cause the camera to stop recording.
    • Shooting a subject at too close range may result in uneven or jagged images.
