Unable to connect to a dual band wireless router.

    If you are using a VAIO® computer with a wireless LAN adapter that only supports the 2.4 GHz frequency, then it may not detect and properly connect to a dual band WLAN router that supports both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies. Issues may include dropped connections, slow speeds or limited connectivity.

    NOTE: Dual band routers can be configured to use both Wi-Fi frequencies. You can set one band to 2.4 GHz (802.11g/b/n) and the other to 5 GHz (802.11a/n). Each band has its own network name or SSID and may even have different passwords. This allows computers that are configured for either frequency to connect to the wireless router.

    The issue may be resolved using the following information:

      NOTE: For information specific to your router about updating the firmware or configuring the bands and wireless protocols, refer to the documentation of the router or contact the manufacturer.

    • Verify you are connecting to the network name or SSID of the 2.4 GHz band on the router.
    • Download and install the latest driver update for the WLAN adapter available online through the Drivers & Software link on this page.
    • Install the latest firmware update for the router.
    • Configure the 5 GHz band on the router to only support Wireless-N (802.11n).

    The following WLAN adapters, as well as some others, only support the 2.4 GHz band:

    • Atheros® LAN Express AS IEEE 802.11g PCI-E adapter 2.4 GHz (802.11b/g)
    • Atheros AR928X Wireless Network Adapter (802.11b/g/n)
    • Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (802.11b/g/n)
