Benefits and improvements

This utility updates the HES-V1000 software to version 1.09.065, and provides the following benefits:

Improvements over software version 1.08.059:

  • Enhanced playback compatibility with certain BD-ROM format discs.
  • Improves BD-Java compatibility to enhance interactivity with some BD-ROM discs.

Benefits provided by previous updates and included in version 1.09.065:

  • The One Touch Backup function is added.
  • Improves the Graphical User Interface (GUI) by providing additional information regarding the discs in a CD, DVD, or BD-ROM multiple disc set (including the "disc number" and "total discs" for the set).
    Note: Multiple disc set information will not be updated automatically in your HES-V1000. To take advantage of this new feature, you must manually register the discs after the firmware update is complete. To learn how to manually register the discs, please refer to page 33 the Operating Instructions.

Before You Start


Check the Current Software Version

  1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the HES-V1000 Home Entertainment Server is connected.
  2. Power on the HES-V1000 Home Entertainment Server.
  3. Press "HOME" to go to the Home Menu.
  4. At the "HOME" menu, select "Settings".
  5. At the "Settings" screen, select "System Settings" and then press "ENTER".
  6. At the "System Settings" screen, select "Device Information" and then press "ENTER".
  7. The software version currently installed on the HES-V1000 will be listed on the television screen. If the version number is 1.09.065 or higher, it is not necessary to install this software update.

How To Get the Software Update

There are three ways to obtain the HES-V1000 software update.

  • Network Update:
    • The Network Update operation is straightforward, so it is highly recommended that you use the Network Update method.
    • You will need to connect the HES-V1000 to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable.
    • Please see the Software Update Guide, or the Network Update Instructions section below, for more information.
  • Create an Update Disc:
    • If you cannot connect the HES-V1000 to your Internet source, please use the disc update method.
    • Please click the Download Now link at the top or bottom of this page to download the software update.
    • Please see the Software Update Guide, or the Download the Software and Create an Update Disc section below, for more information.
    • A drive with CD disc burning capability is required to create the update disc.
  • Request an Update Disc
    • If you cannot connect the HES-V1000 to your Internet source, please use the disc update method.
    • If you cannot create a CD on your computer, Sony will provide a free disc containing the firmware update. Please contact Sony Support at 1-800-222-SONY (7669) to place your order.
    • After you receive the disc, please see the Software Update Guide, or the Disc Update Instructions section below, for more information.

Network Update Instructions

The Network Update operation is straightforward, so it is highly recommended that you use the Network Update method to update the HES-V1000 software.


  • Important Notes
    • If you have not done so already, please check the current software version to determine if this software update is needed for your HES-V1000 Home Entertainment Server.
    • WARNING!! Please follow the update instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the update process and may cause the Home Entertainment Server to be unresponsive or to require repair.
    • WARNING!! Do not power off the Home Entertainment Server or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the software update may cause the Home Entertainment Server to be unresponsive or to require repair.
    • In order to use this update method it is necessary to have the HES-V1000 correctly connected to an active Internet connection.
      Note: If you cannot connect the HES-V1000 to your Internet source, please see the How To Get the Software Update section above for information about software update disc options.
    • In order to perform the software update, it is necessary to have the HES-V1000 correctly connected to a compatible television.
    • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

  • Network Update Instructions
    • WARNING!! Do not power off the Home Entertainment Server or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Doing so may damage the Home Entertainment Server to the point of requiring repair.
    • WARNING!! Do not press any buttons, except as instructed, until the update is complete. Doing so may damage the Home Entertainment Server to the point of requiring repair.
    • The software update process usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on system configuration and network connection.
    1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the HES-V1000 Home Entertainment Server is connected.
    2. Connect the LAN terminal on the HES-V1000 to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable.
    3. Power on the HES-V1000 Home Entertainment Server.
    4. Press "HOME" to go to the Home Menu.
    5. At the "Home" menu, select "Settings".
    6. At the "Settings" menu, select "System Settings" and then press "ENTER".
    7. At the "System Settings" screen, select "Software Update" and then press "ENTER".
    8. At the "Software Update" screen, select "Network Update" and then press "ENTER".
      Note: The network connection display appears.
    9. Select "Yes" and press "ENTER".
      Note: The server starts to check the version information.
    10. At the version confirmation screen, select "Yes" and then press "ENTER".
    11. The software License Agreement appears. After reading the content, select "Agree" and press "ENTER".
    12. The software update is downloaded and automatically starts updating the HES-V1000 software.

      While the software update is downloading:

      • "DOWNLOADING XX%" appears on the front panel display, indicating the progress.
      • If the download fails, an error message appears on the screen, and the display returns to the Home Menu.

      When the software update is complete:

      • "VERSION UP FINISH" appears on the front panel display, indicating that the update was successful.
      • If "VERSION UP FAIL" appears on the front panel display, repeat the update procedure above.
    13. The system will power off automatically.
    14. Power on the Home Entertainment Server again.

    Notes:

    • When the server restarts the update sequence finishes and the soft update is complete.
    • An email will be stored in "Settings" - "Message" notifying you that the software update is successful.

  • Network Update FAQ
    Q: When I watched the progress message "VERSION UP XX%", the progress "XX%" sometimes decreased. What was happening? A: The Home Entertainment Server automatically retries the software update process when the progress "XX%" decreases. The update is successful when "VERSION UP FINISH" is displayed on the front panel finally.
    Q: When running network update, the television keeps showing "Checking for a newer version �" and no response. A: Please take the following steps:
    1. Disconnect the network cable and wait until the television shows an error message.
    2. Check whether the server's network settings are appropriate. If you use a proxy server, type the IP address of the proxy you use instead of the proxy host name in the "Proxy Server" input field.
    Q: When running network update, the television shows "Network Connect Error" and you cannot update the software. A: Verify that server's network settings are appropriate. If you use a proxy server, type IP address of the proxy you use instead of the proxy host name in the "Proxy Server" input field.
    Q: The software update does not finish, after running for more than 60 minutes. A: Please call Sony Support at 1-877-531-SONY (7669).

Download the Software and Create an Update Disc

If you cannot connect the HES-V1000 to your Internet source, please use the disc update method.


  • Important Notes
    • If you have not done so already, please check the current software version to determine if this software update is needed for your HES-V1000 Home Entertainment Server.

    • Use a brand new recordable disc to burn the software update. The Home Entertainment Server may not be able to correctly read a dirty disc or a disc with scratches.
    • Recommended disc types for creating the software update disc:
      • CD Disc Types: CD-R or CD-RW
      • DVD Disc Types: DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD+R-DL, or DVD-RAM
    • Recommended operating systems for the computer that will download the software update:
      • Microsoft® Windows® 98 SE or later is needed.
      • Windows 7, Windows Vista®, Windows XP, or Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4) is recommended.
    • In order to perform the software update, it is necessary to have the HES-V1000 correctly connected to a compatible television.
    • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.
  • Download the Software Update and Create the Disc
    1. Click the Download Now link at the top or bottom of this page to download the updater_HESV1000_1-09-065.exe file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
    2. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and verify that the size of the updater_HESV1000_1-09-065.exe file is 68,961,280 bytes.
      1. Right-click the updater_HESV1000_1-09-065.exe file, and click "Properties".
      2. On the "updater_HESV1000_1-09-065.exe Properties" screen, verify that the "Size:" listed is "65.7 MB (68,961,280 bytes)".
        Note: The "Size on disk:" listed may be different. That is normal.
      3. If the file size is different than the "68,961,280 bytes", please download the updater_HESV1000_1-09-065.exe file again.
    3. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click the updater_HESV1000_1-09-065.exe file to extract the software update.
    4. At the "updater_HESV1000_1-09-065.exe" dialog box, type a location, or click "Browse", to select a location for the uncompressed update, and then click "OK". The updater_HESV1000_1-09-065.iso file will be extracted to the specified location.
    5. Use the "Burn Image" option of your disc burning software to create the update disc from the updater_HESV1000_1-09-065.iso file.
    6. Disc Burning Notes:
      • Do not create a data disc. In order for the update disc to work, you must create it using the "Burn Image" option of your disc burning software.
      • The update disc must be finalized. Be sure to select "Finalize disc (No further writing possible)" in your disc burning software to finalize the update disc.
      • If write errors occur during the disc burning process, discard the disc and create a new update disc.
      • Burning the disc using packet writing software is not supported.
      • Do not use an update disc created using any other process than the one described above.
    7. Use the disc you just created and follow the steps in the Disc Update Instructions section below.

Disc Update Instructions

The instructions below are for how to install the software update using a disc. The steps are the same whether you downloaded the software and created the disc, or whether you ordered the disc from Sony.


  • Disc Update Instructions
    • WARNING!! Do not power off the Home Entertainment Server or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Doing so may damage the Home Entertainment Server to the point of requiring repair.
    • WARNING!! Do not press any buttons, except as instructed, until the update is complete. Doing so may damage the Home Entertainment Server to the point of requiring repair.
    • The software update process usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on system configuration and network connection.
    1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the HES-V1000 Home Entertainment Server is connected.
    2. Power on the HES-V1000 Home Entertainment Server.
    3. Press "HOME" to go to the Home Menu.
    4. At the "Home" menu, select "Settings".
    5. At the "Settings" menu, select "System Settings" and then press "ENTER".
    6. At the "System Settings" screen, select "Software Update" and then press "ENTER".
    7. At the "Software Update" screen, select "Disc Update" and then press "ENTER".
    8. Press the "open/close" button and place the update disc on the disc tray with the recording side facing down.
    9. Press the "open/close" button again.
      Note: A confirmation request appears on the display.
    10. Select "yes" and then press "ENTER".
    11. The software update starts.
      • On the front panel display, "VERSION UP" is displayed, and then a "VERSION UP XX%" message appears, indicating the progress.
      • When the update finishes "VERSION UP FINISH" appears on the front panel display, indicating that the update was successful, and the disc is ejected.
      • If "VERSION UP FAIL" appears on the front panel display and the disc is ejected, repeat the update procedure above.
    12. The system will power off automatically.
    13. Remove the disc and then power on the Home Entertainment Server again.
    Notes:
    • When the server restarts the update sequence finishes and the soft update is complete.
    • An email will be stored in "Settings" - "Message" notifying you that the software update is successful.

  • Disc Update FAQ
    Q: How can I verify that the update disc was burned correctly? A: Please take the following steps:
    1. Press the "open/close" button of Home Entertainment Server and place the update disc on the disc tray with the recording side facing down.
    2. Press "open/close" button again.
    3. Press "HOME", and select "Video" - "Others" and then press "ENTER" after the "LOADING" message on the front display disappears.
    4. You can verify your disc is burned correctly when you see the disc information "This is a software update disc" on the television screen.
    If you cannot find the above disc information, please make another update disc.
    Q: When I watched the progress message "VERSION UP XX%", the progress "XX%" sometimes decreased. What was happening?     Q: When I double click on the the updater_HESV1000_1-09-065.exe update file I downloaded from the update web site, the the updater_HESV1000_1-09-065.iso file is not created and the following error message appears: "Win32 Cabinet Self-Extraction". A: The download may have failed. Delete the downloaded file and download the update file again.
