Before You Start

Check the Current Firmware Version

  1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theater System is connected.
  2. Power on the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theater System.
  3. Press the FUNCTION button repeatedly until BD/DVD function appears in the front panel display.
  4. If the system starts to play a disc, press the STOP button and wait until the xross media bar™ menu is displayed on the television before proceeding.
  5. Use the arrow keys on the remote control to select Setup - System Settings, and then press the ENTER button.
  6. Use the arrow keys to select System Information, and then press the ENTER button.
  7. The firmware version currently installed on the Blu-ray Disc player will be listed on the television screen.

  8. If the last three digits of the version number are 789 or higher, it is not necessary to install this firmware update.

Download the Firmware and Create an Update Disc

If you cannot connect the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theater System to your Internet source, please use the disc update method.

Important Notes:

  • If you have not done so already, please check the current firmware version to determine if this firmware update is needed for your Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theater System.
  • WARNING: Please follow the update instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the update process and may cause the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theater System to be unresponsive or to require repair.
  • WARNING: Do not power off the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theater System or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware update may cause the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theater System to be unresponsive or to require repair.
  • Use a brand new CD-R disc to burn the firmware update. The system may not be able to correctly read a dirty disc or a disc with scratches.
    Note: A CD-R disc is strongly recommended. Do not use a CD-RW disc.
  • Recommended operating system for the computer that will download the firmware update:
    • Microsoft® Windows® 10
    • Microsoft® Windows® 8.1
    • Microsoft® Windows® 8
    • Microsoft Windows 7
    • Microsoft Windows Vista®
  • A drive with CD disc burning capability, and a new blank CD-R disc are required to create the update disc.
  • After you create the disc, please see the Disc Update Instructions section below, for more information.
  • If you are unable to create the upgrade disc you can purchase one from the True Manuals web site.
  • In order to perform the firmware update, it is necessary to have the system correctly connected to a compatible television.
  • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.
Download and Disc Creation Instructions
  1. Download the UPDATA_M04R789.ZIP file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
  2. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and verify that the size of the UPDATA_M04R789.ZIP file is 38,488,177 bytes.
    1. Right-click the UPDATA_M04R789.ZIP file, and click Properties.
    2. On the UPDATA_M04R789.ZIP Properties screen, verify that the Size: listed is 36.7 MB (38,488,177 bytes).
      Note: The Size on disk: listed may be different. That is normal.
    3. If the file size is different than the 38,488,177 bytes, please download the UPDATA_M04R789.ZIP file again.
  3. Double-click the UPDATA_M04R789.ZIP file extract the firmware files to a temporary directory (please note this directory for reference).
    Note: Two files will be extracted: MSB04-FW.BIN and MSB04-FW.ID
  4. Burn the MSB04-FW.BIN and MSB04-FW.ID files to a new CD-R and be sure to finalize the disc.
    Note: Click here for instructions on how to burn the upgrade CD using utilities that came with your operating system.
  5. If write errors occur during the CD burning process, discard the disc and create a new upgrade disc.

Disc Update Instructions

The instructions below are for how to install the firmware update using a disc. The steps are the same whether you downloaded the firmware and created the disc, or whether you ordered the disc from Sony.

Firmware Update Instructions

WARNING! Do not power off the system or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Doing so may damage the system to the point of requiring repair.

WARNING! Do not press any buttons, except as instructed, until the update is complete. Doing so may damage the system to the point of requiring repair.

Note: The firmware update process takes a minimum of 30 minutes.

  1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theater System is connected.
  2. Power on the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theater System.
  3. Press the FUNCTION button repeatedly until BD/DVD function appears in the front panel display.
    IMPORTANT: The update cannot be performed unless the system is set to "BD/DVD" function.
  4. At the xross media bar™ menu, use the arrow keys on the remote control to select SetupSystem Settings, and then press the ENTER button.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select Quick Start Mode and make sure that the Quick Start Mode is set to Off.
    Note: If the Quick Start Mode is set to On, change the setting to Off. Otherwise, the firmware upgrade may not succeed.
  6. Place the update disc in the system, and close the disc tray.
  7. After the disc is loaded, the message Perform version update? is displayed on the television.
  8. Use the remote control to select OK, and then press the ENTER button.
  9. The update process starts and UPDATING appears on the front panel display.
  10. While the update is installed the message UPDATING is displayed on the front display.
  11. The firmware update is complete when COMPLETE appears on the front panel display, and then the system powers off automatically.
    WARNING: Do not operate or power off the system until this message is displayed. Doing so may result in your system being unresponsive and requiring repair.
  12. Power on the system and remove the update disc from the system.
  13. Power on the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theater System.
  14. Check the current firmware version to confirm that the update has successfully installed.
    Note: If the last three digits of the version number are 789, the firmware update was successful.
Disc Update FAQ

Q: The system does not output a 3D signal after installing the 3D update even if the system is connected to 3D-compatible TV.

A: Connect the system to a 3D-compatible TV using a high-speed HDMI cable, and then perform the following procedure:

  1. On the remote control, press the HOME button.
  2. Use the arrow keys to select Setup.
  3. Use the arrow keys to select Screen Settings, and then press the ENTER button.
  4. Use the arrow keys to select Output Video Format, and then press the ENTER button.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select HDMI, and then press the ENTER button.
  6. Select Auto, and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the setup.

Q: INCOMPLETE is displayed on the front panel display.

A: Please perform the following procedure:

  1. Disconnect the AC power cord from the wall outlet. Wait several minutes and then reconnect the power.
  2. Power on the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theater System.
  3. Follow the Disc Update Instructions again.

If the issue persists after performing the upgrade again, please contact Sony Support at 1-866-909-SONY (7669).

Q: UPDATING is not displayed on the front panel display when the update disc is inserted.

A: Remove the update disc from the system and delete the update files from your computer. Follow the steps in the Download the Firmware and Create an Update Disc section to create a new update disc and then follow the steps in the Disc Update Instructions section to install the firmware update.

Q: The power was shut down during the update process.

A: Power on the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theater System, and then follow the Disc Update Instructions again.

Q: When I double click the UPDATA_M04R789.ZIP upgrade file I downloaded from the upgrade web site, the MSB04-FW.BIN and MSB04-FW.ID files are not created.

A: The download may have failed. Delete the downloaded file and follow the steps in the Download the Firmware and Create an Upgrade Disc section to create a new upgrade disc

Q: The firmware update process is still not finished after running for more than 30 minutes.

A: Please perform the following procedure:

  1. Disconnect the AC power cord from the wall outlet. Wait several minutes and then reconnect the power.
  2. Power on the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theater System.
  3. Follow the Disc Update Instructions again.
