How to Clean Install the Microsoft® Windows® XP Home or Windows® XP Pro Operating System and Sony® VAIO® Applications

The following instructions will guide you through an installation of the Microsoft Windows XP Home or Professional Edition Operating System, and, subsequently, an installation of Sony VAIO software programs on this new image.

These instructions will alter or delete your existing installation of the Microsoft Windows XP Operating System. Back up any important data before proceeding with this installation.

CAUTION: These instructions are provided only as guidelines, and are not intended for the novice user. Proceed at your own risk. Sony is not liable for any data loss or damage to your computer that may result from following these guidelines.

    Preinstallation Conditions

Installation requires that you own a licensed copy of the Microsoft Windows XP Home or Professional Installation CD.

Before proceeding with the installation of the Microsoft Windows XP Operating System, verify that you have completed the following tasks:

    • Create a Recovery Media kit using the VAIO Recovery Wizard provided on the computer's original factory-installed image.
    • Download driver updates (for the original, factory-installed software) for your computer model from the Sony Online Support Web site (http://www.sony.com/pcsupport). Check the Updates section for any drivers that may be newer than the original factory-installed drivers. Burn these newer drivers to a CD-R/RW disc. If you choose to not remove certain hard disk partitions during the installation of the Microsoft Windows XP Operating System, you can copy the newer drivers to a new folder.
    • IMPORTANT:  If a Windows XP Service Pack is installed as part of your computer's current operating system configuration, the new operating system you are installing must contain at least the same or a higher version of Windows XP Service Pack.

      • EXAMPLE: Current = Windows XP with WinXP SP1 from Sony
--> Clean Install = Windows XP with SP1 or higher
      • EXAMPLE: Current = Windows XP with WinXP SP2 from Sony
--> Clean Install = Windows XP with SP2
    • CAUTION: You must download the Sony Shared Library, which is listed as part of the original shipping drivers, as this is a requirement for installing VAIO applications.

    A. Installing the Microsoft Windows XP Operating System    Back to top

    1. Boot the computer with the Microsoft Windows XP Home or Professional Operating System Installation CD inserted in your optical drive.
    2. If the Microsoft Windows XP Setup asks if you want to repair any previous installations of Microsoft Windows XP, press the Escape key.
    3. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up drive partitions. It is recommended to keep the C: and D: partitions to achieve the best compatibility with VAIO applications.
    4. After setting up your drive partitions, select the partition in which you would like to install the Microsoft Windows XP Operating System (the C: partition is highly recommended), and press the Enter key.
    5. At the next screen, select the desired formatting option. The "Format the partition using the NTFS file system" option is recommended.
    6. After formatting is complete, follow the prompts to proceed with the Microsoft Windows XP installation.
    7. After installation is complete, the computer will restart and boot into the "Welcome to Microsoft Windows" screen. Follow the prompts to proceed through initial setup of the Microsoft Windows XP Operating System.

After the computer boots to the Windows Desktop for the first time, installation of the Microsoft Windows XP Operating System is complete. If you created any new hard disk partition(s) during the Microsoft Windows XP Operating System Setup, you will need to format the partition(s) in order to the use them in Windows XP.

    To format a partition:

    1. Launch "My Computer" from the Start menu.
    2. Right-click on the drive you wish to format, and click "Format".
    3. If you wish, you can change the default formatting options. However, the default options are adequate.
    4. Click Start, and then OK, to proceed with formatting.

    B. Installing Sony Drivers and Windows Updates    Back to top

It is necessary to update certain drivers on your computer, as the Microsoft Windows XP Operating System does not automatically ship many of the Sony VAIO® drivers. Use the following steps to update necessary drivers.

    1. Browse to the folder where you saved the driver updates that were downloaded from the Sony Support Web site (see the Preinstallation Conditions section). If you burned them to a CD, insert it and browse to the drivers.
    2. Double-click the first driver update executable file in the folder to begin its installation. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the driver. Most drivers will require you to restart the computer.
    3. Repeat Step 2 for each driver update in the folder.
    4. After you have run all driver update installations, restart your computer manually (Click Start, select Shut Down, and click Restart).

At this point it is highly recommended that you set up an Internet connection, in order to access the Microsoft Windows Update site at www.windowsupdate.com. Minimally, you should download all the critical updates. Certain updates may be necessary if you want to use certain VAIO applications, as discussed in Section D, VAIO Application Dependencies.

If you do not need to install any VAIO applications, you have completed the essential configuration for this installation of the Microsoft Windows XP Operating System.

    C. Installing VAIO® Applications    Back to top

To install VAIO applications, you will need the Recovery Media kit that you originally created (see the Preinstallation Conditions section). Also, ensure that you have installed all of the original, factory-installed driver updates (section C), specifically, the Sony Shared Library update is required to use your Recovery Media kit, after an installation of the Microsoft Windows XP Operating System.

Certain VAIO applications require more than one software component to be installed from the Recovery Media in order to function correctly. Please refer to the table in Section D, VAIO Application Dependencies.

To install applications, follow the steps below:

    1. Boot the Microsoft Windows XP Operating System.
    2. Insert Disc 1 of your Recovery Media set (created in Step 1). The VAIO Application Recovery Wizard dialog will appear.
    3. Select the checkboxes next to the applications that you wish to recover, and click Next.
    4. Follow the prompts to proceed with installation of the selected software. Some software may require a restart. Allow the system to restart before proceeding with installation of other software.
    5. At the "Application Recovery Complete" dialog, click Finish.

If you receive any errors during installation or use of the software, check the table in Section D, VAIO Application Dependencies, for any software components that you may have forgotten to install.

After installing the desired VAIO applications, the configuration for your installation of the Microsoft Windows XP Operating System is complete.

    D. VAIO Application Dependencies    Back to top

All VAIO applications are dependent on the installation of the Sony Shared Library. All of the original, factory-installed drivers should be installed before proceeding with a VAIO application recovery.
