Behind every Sony TV screen there’s a wealth of unique signal processing and panel control technologies working to create a picture that takes your breath away.
Introducing Sony 8K, exclusively powered by X1 Ultimate
With 7680x4320 pixels, our 8K HDR technology powered by our acclaimed X1™ Ultimate processor gives you four times the resolution of 4K for an incredibly immersive viewing experience. Pictures fill your field of view with extraordinary depth and texture. Get close and enjoy the fine details you could never see before.
Simply upscaling from a 2K or 4K signal to 8K will not achieve the exceptionally high quality standards of 8K, creating the need for dedicated 8K upscaling technology. Our 8K X-Reality™ PRO meets this need with an exclusive 8K database. Patterns in scenes are analysed and enhanced using the database to find the most accurate texture and character for incredibly detailed, close to true 8K pictures.
Due to its low transmission rate, generating brightness on an 8K panel is difficult. By precisely balancing the light output across the screen, dimming LEDs independently and boosting others, X-tended Dynamic Range™ PRO reveals a brightness range several times that of a conventional LED-backlit TV.
As enough light passes through each pixel, the screen becomes brighter with less transmission rate issues.
As pixel density is higher with 8K resolution, less light passes through the pixels compared to 4K so the screen becomes darker.
The Backlight Master Drive can display an unprecedented dynamic range with incredibly deep black and dazzling lights. This backlight system has an ultra-dense LED structure, a unique local dimming algorithm and optical design.
INDEPENDENT LED MODULE CONTROL
To get the best out of the Backlight Master Drive, a new, innovative algorithm controls the ultra-dense LED structure. Each LED module is independently controlled, creating a spectacularly accurate picture.
Calibrated beam LED design
The Backlight Master Drive has a unique design which gathers LED lights in one spot, reducing light diffusion and the flare effect that can be seen on other full-array LED TVs. It ensures that each LED emits a straight beam for a clear picture which displays vivid lights and dark blacks.

Object-based Super Resolution
Our TVs with Object-based Super Resolution technology detect individual objects in a picture and preserve detail on screen. Hundreds of objects are identified and their resolution individually enhanced to give a picture of exceptional accuracy and detail.
Object-based HDR remaster
With Object-based HDR remaster, the colour in individual objects on screen is analysed and the contrast adjusted, unlike most TVs where contrast is only adjusted along one black-to-white contrast curve. Because objects are remastered individually, this TV can reproduce greater depth, textures and more realistic pictures.
Super Bit Mapping HDR
There are thousands of tones, shades and gradations of light in a sunset. Super Bit Mapping HDR reveals them all. It creates smooth, natural TV picture quality as you watch, without the “banding” that can occur on other TVs.
Dual database processing
One database is used to clean the picture, reducing on-screen noise. The other is used to upscale the resolution, improving clarity. These two powerful image improvement databases work together, dynamically improving pixels in real time. Each database has tens of thousands of references, amassed from our experience creating content for TV and movies over the years.
Compressed noise is identified by the database which includes "before and after” data on what a picture should look like and removes the compressed picture noise.
The upscaling database also includes "before and after" data which is used to upscale the signal and create a more realistic picture.
It’s the knowledge from filming and developing blockbuster movies and TV shows that makes our legendary 4K X-Reality™ PRO & X-Reality™ PRO so special. Patterns in each scene are analysed and enhanced by unique databases to find the most accurate hue, saturation and brightness for each resolution.
This screen has millions of self-illuminating OLED pixels that can be individually activated to reproduce truly lifelike pictures. Because each pixel lights up independently, you'll see more accurate detail, colour and shades in every scene with OLED technology.
Our OLED TVs are designed to prevent image burn-in. The Picture Processor X1™ Ultimate and 4K HDR Processor X1™ Extreme detect if there is a static image on screen and shifts the pixel to avoid burn-in or image retention.
Our original panel controller for OLED maximises dynamic range by widening the area of colour reproduction at high brightness. Pictures are enhanced with extra detail and texture.
Watching TV from the sides is now as satisfying as from the centre. Sony's original optical design to control light from the backlight, the X-Wide Angle panel ensures colours stay true from wherever you're watching.
By precisely balancing the light output across the screen, dimming some areas and boosting others, X-tended Dynamic Range™ PRO reveals a brightness range three times that of a conventional LED-backlit TV. It enhances any source to near HDR quality with a wider range of brightness.
HDR technology
High Dynamic Range (HDR) enhances the dynamic range of a picture, increasing the contrast between the brightest whites and darkest blacks. Every pixel is made more accurate, regardless of resolution, bringing scenes to life with greater detail. Movies and TV shows in HDR are closer to the original recording and the director’s vision with more brightness, contrast and colour, for a truly lifelike viewing experience.
A TRILUMINOS™ Display excels at reproducing reds, greens and blues – colours that are notoriously difficult for TVs to display accurately. It reproduces the finest colour variations for the best pictures.
