The FX2's full-frame sensor produces footage with smooth, natural gradations thanks to 15+ stops of latitude when recording with S-Log3, ensuring even high-contrast scenes are captured in full detail. Base ISO for S-Log3 capture can be set to 800 or 4000, and the camera supports S-Gamut3/S-Gamut3.Cine colour gamuts for broad compatibility. Log recording modes for production flexibility

For creative flexibility, there are three modes available for Log recording — Flexible ISO, Cine EI, and Cine EI Quick — with Cine EI widely used in professional filmmaking for footage shot with post production in mind. Based on the shooting environment, choose a base ISO of either 800 or 4000 to maintain maximum latitude throughout the shoot, allowing specific tonal ranges to be enhanced in post production to achieve your desired cinematic look.

Multiple recording formats for versatile shooting and editing

7K oversampling is used with full pixel readout and no pixel binning when shooting full-frame 4K (QFHD 3840 x 2160), and 4K 60p (59.94p) recording is available in Super 35mm mode. With 10-bit depth, 4:2:2 colour sampling, an efficient MPEG-H HEVC/H.265 codec, and Intra recording including DCI-4K (4096 x 2160), outstanding quality is assured.

Import up to 16 user LUTs

With the FX2, LUTs can be imported and applied to the LCD monitor and the electronic viewfinder while shooting or playing back movies. Up to 16 user LUT files can be imported from memory cards or Sony’s Creators’ Cloud and selected as needed. The LUT used for recording can then be embedded in the video metadata for post-production.

Picture Profile presets make it easy to adjust colour and gradation to create a variety of moods in camera. These include the invaluable S-Cinetone™, which produces beautiful skin tones. Imported user LUTs can be registered as PPLUT 1 to 4 and applied during recording, and an expanded range of 12 Creative Look profiles, including FL2 and FL3, offers a comprehensive selection of visual moods for many recording needs.

Anamorphic lenses are a popular choice for creating a distinctly cinematic look. The FX2 is equipped with a desqueeze display mode that allows monitoring in the standard CinemaScope aspect ratio of 2.39:1 while shooting with anamorphic lenses. It offers 1.3x and 2.0x desqueeze settings, and Sony’s Monitor & Control app provides even more detailed settings for monitoring on a tablet or other external display devices.

An FPS menu inherits features from Cinema Line higher-end models, including a [Variable] setting that allows intuitive frame-rate control: up to 2.5x slow motion at 4K resolution, or up to 5x slow motion when recording in Full HD at up to 120 fps.

Compact and lightweight with built-in accessory mount points

With the same compact flat-top design as the Cinema Line FX3 and FX30, the FX2 is ideal for handheld shooting as well as gimbal and drone mounting. The magnesium alloy exterior has 1/4-20 (UNC) screw holes in three locations for mounting accessories, and two additional screw holes are located on the bottom panel for secure tripod mounting.

AI-based Real-time Recognition AF

Equipped with a powerful AI processing unit, the FX2 is capable of Real-time Recognition AF for humans, animals, birds, vehicles and even insects. A detection frame indicates the recognised subject and tracking can be initiated simply by touching the subject on the monitor screen. Advanced human pose estimation technology accurately recognises subject movement, and human eye recognition has been improved by about 30% compared to the FX3/FX30.

Fine-tuned focus control

AF Assist allows seamless switching to manual focus for smooth focus transitions, while a range of 7 autofocus transition speed settings and 5 sensitivity settings offer detailed control. Focus Map makes it easier to visualise depth of field by overlaying focus info on the live view display, and the Breathing Compensation function can significantly enhance image stability.

Automatic framing using advanced AI

The FX2's Auto Framing feature automatically crops and tracks a subject to keep them in a prominent position when the camera is mounted on a tripod, producing footage that looks like it was shot by an experienced operator. The Framing Stabilizer function automatically keeps the subject in the same position within the frame, which can be useful, for example, when the camera operator is moving alongside the subject.

Active Mode boosts stabilisation while walking and shooting. Or, for shooting at an even faster pace, there’s Dynamic active Mode that utilises electronic stabilisation for as much as 30% greater effect, making it possible to shoot stable footage even when running around. Corresponding stabilisation metadata is embedded in the footage for efficient post production.

A single switch selects MOVIE or STILL mode and instantly recalls all the corresponding settings. In addition to providing 33 MP resolution and continuous bursts at up to 10 fps, the camera is equipped with a [Creating still images from Shot Marks] function that allows you to snap stills while recording or playing video that has a previously imported user LUT.

Tiltable high-definition electronic viewfinder

Keep focused on shooting even in bright or distracting environments, thanks to an OLED viewfinder with approximately 3.68 million dots. Magnification is 0.70x (50mm lens, infinity focus, -1m-1 dioptre), and the angle of view and eyepoint are optimised for video recording. The viewfinder itself can be rotated from 0 ° to +90° for easy viewing at just about any angle, and the eye cup can be removed or reversed left-to-right as necessary.

Frequently used parameters all in one place

The FX2 inherits the BIG6 (Home) screen from high-end CineAlta cameras such as VENICE, which allows you to easily monitor six essential parameters in MOVIE mode: FPS (frame rate), ISO, Shutter (speed/angle), Aperture or ND Filter, Look, and White Balance. This proven BIG6 (Home) screen contributes to smooth, intuitive operation, and provides quick access to Variable/Fixed parameters.

Effective heat management

Enjoy uninterrupted video recording time for formats up to 4K 59.94p. Heat buildup is prevented through a combination of an internal cooling fan, a highly thermal conductive graphite material used in the image stabilisation unit, and an innovative design that allows ample air intake even when the LCD monitor is closed. The cooling fan has three modes that can be selected according to shooting conditions: Auto, Minimum, and Off while Recording.

Plenty of power for long shoots

A high-capacity NP-FZ100 battery and effective power management provide up to 100 minutes of actual video time or up to 155 minutes of continuous shooting. For longer shooting times, continuous power can be supplied from a power adaptor or a mobile battery that supports USB Power Delivery (PD). The optional DC-C1 DC Coupler can supply stable power without occupying the camera’s USB Type-C® terminal.

Digital audio without degradation

With an XLR Handle Unit XLR-H1 attached, the FX2 can record high-quality audio via two XLR connectors and a digital audio interface without the need for extra batteries or cables. Microphones equipped with XLR connectors are available separately. Four-channel audio, 24-bit recording, and other settings can be easily applied.

The FX2 is also a great choice for live streaming to a computer via USB (UVC/UAC) or a wireless or wired LAN network. You can stream up to 4K (3840 x 2160) 59.94p video via LAN while simultaneously recording to the camera’s memory card. LAN streaming protocols include RTMP, RTMPS, and SRT.

CFexpress Type A memory card support

Two card slots support SDXC/SDHC UHS-II/UHS-I memory cards, with one also supporting CFexpress Type A cards, giving you plenty of options for stable and reliable high-bitrate recording. Select the recording mode to suit your needs: video and stills can be recorded to different cards, recording can be automatically switched to a second card when the first is full, and more.

An HDMI Type-A terminal enables 4K 60p (59.94p) 4:2:2 10-bit or 16-bit RAW video output to an external recorder for flexible post production. 16-bit RAW video is output at 4672 x 2628 resolution (16:9 aspect ratio), which also covers DCI-4K (4096 x 2160), with selectable [59.94p]/[29.97p]/[23.98p]/[24.00p] frame rates. Video output via HDMI can occur simultaneously with proxy recording to an internal memory card.

Monitor & Control

Sony’s Monitor & Control app not only allows intuitive remote operation and image monitoring on a smartphone or tablet screen but also provides waveform and other displays for exposure confirmation and precise focusing. Multi-monitoring is available when multiple cameras are wirelessly connected to a single iPad. All of this can contribute to smoother workflows with a minimal crew.

The Catalyst Browse and Catalyst Prepare apps allow convenient editing of video recorded in Log mode with embedded LUTs. Shot marks and OK/NG/KEEP flags added while recording can also be imported for easier shot selection. Image stabilisation, breathing compensation, rolling shutter, and other metadata embedded while recording can be used to make precise corrections during post production.
