Combining AI and blockchain to change social systems


Blockchain technology has drawn attention for its immense possibilities, and holds promise for accelerating innovation in Sony's businesses and services as well. The ability to safely manage, share, and circulate massive amounts of data will lead to the creation of new value.

Combining Sony's data to create a variety of value

Making the circulation of currency open resulted in the creation of a new value known as virtual currency, which developed into a massive market. I believe the same thing will happen in many other fields as well. Sony aims to use blockchain technology to update our existing social systems and take them in new directions. Blockchain technology has the potential to overturn the prevailing wisdom of capitalism; I believe this technology has that level of impact.

Sony has gathered large amounts of data through our business in electronics as well as movies, music, video games, and finance. Using blockchain technology to circulate data in these fields, and skillfully combining data from various fields should create new value the likes of which we have never seen before. Such challenge is well within reach for the Sony Group.

Blockchain will change education and music

Sony Global Education, Inc. where I serve as president, is also taking an initiative to leverage blockchain technology. The individual grade data we have worked with is associated with schools and cram schools. Blockchain technology makes it possible to associate these types of data with individuals. This will enable people to handle their own academic progress record, and to have control over how to improve their learning cycle, for example. I believe this will change education as we know it, and make it substantially more efficient.
For example, in Japan, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications is investigating the effectiveness of educational blockchain technology as part of its Smart School Platform Demonstration Project.

In addition, in the field of music, Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc. released a service called "soundmain," and is working toward a breakthrough by using blockchain technology to subdivide and manage copyrights information.
This would expectedly create value in the sampling music market by enabling distribution between creators and users at reasonable prices.

Universal AI is optimal for goals that are clear;
human versatility is what makes goal-setting possible

AI simulates the workings of the human brain, so it has a complementary relationship with blockchain, which accumulates data. Making the two inseparable should take society in a more prosperous direction. If the goal is clear, AI tends to find optimal solutions that are rigidly uniform. In contrast, humans are versatile beings, and they make mistakes, but their imperfections are what make them so interesting. Some people view AI as a threat that opposes humans, but we do not see it that way. What we are aiming for is the coexistence of AI and its optimal solutions with humans and their diverse sensibilities. History proves that innovation is created from versatility. It is not possible to replace human individuality. Thus, it is all the more important to use education as a tool to enhance qualities unique to humans. In that spirit, we will continue to use the technologies of blockchain and AI for educational efforts as we sculpt the future.
