Collaborating in research and development of autonomous cooking robots

Sony and Carnegie Mellon University are collaborating in the research and development of robots able to support humans in a kitchen by autonomously performing tasks, including chopping, cooking, and serving. This joint project, which is at the forefront of AI and robotics, is now entering its second year, and is producing a variety of research outcomes. The research will lead to the realization of enhanced quality of life in the future.

Carnegie Mellon University: At the forefront of AI and robotic engineering

Carnegie Mellon University is one of the world's most advanced institutions conducting research in the fields of robotics and AI. The university's School of Computer Science has a Robotics Institute that is a center of research in diverse fields, including computer vision, machine learning, algorithms and autonomy. The specific area that I am studying there is robots collaborating closely with people. For example, I am trying to develop algorithms that will help us create more useful robots using knowledge from psychology and cognitive science.

Research and development of autonomous cooking robots

We are working with Sony on the research and development of autonomous robots that are able to chop and cook food in a kitchen, then deliver that food to customers seated at a table. By detecting various ingredients positioned on tables and conducting trials in which the robots chop them in a variety of patterns, we have already been able to develop an algorithm that determines the most effective method of chopping. You could say that we are pushing the forefront of the algorithms in AI. Algorithms for chopping, and algorithms for perceiving the world in intelligent ways, and algorithms for detecting when people need a robot's assistance at a restaurant table. As the project enters its second year, we've had really interesting results.

AI and robotics will change our daily lives

My vision for artificial intelligence is to apply AI technologies in order to improve people's daily lives. I want to realize AI that will help elderly people live in their own homes longer with more independence, or that will help a child learn mathematics in a simple way. AI and robotics have the potential to significantly change our daily lives and to support people in living more independently and more efficiently.

Sony is constantly at the forefront of robotic technology and AI, and the company has had an excellent relationship with Carnegie Mellon University since the aibo days. Working together with Sony on these projects is an extremely enjoyable experience for us. Why is this? Because Sony truly understands the value of AI and possesses a great vision for making peoples' life better in the future through the application of technology. Sony has an extraordinary wealth of ideas for the application of these technologies, and is highly motivated to explore the newest domains of AI knowledge. We are excited to combine our shared expertise and vision to develop new AI and robot technologies.
