The goal was to bring innovation to a world that saves human lives. Thanks to technology, medicine evolves every day. Yet there is one area of medicine in which innovation has been minimal for almost 60 years: microsurgery. A great deal of skill is expected of surgeons during microsurgery, and their work puts a great strain on their bodies. Further, since they are unable to see the progress of the surgery themselves, support staff have a difficult time assisting the surgeon. To solve this problem, Sony and Olympus formed a new company, Sony Olympus Medical Solutions (SOMED) developed a new 4K 3D surgical microscope system. In this video, project team members from both Sony and Olympus discuss the background of the project, as well as the challenges they faced in developing this revolutionary system.
