Clear, open highs with solid mids and lows

A newly developed microphone capsule, machined brass acoustic tube, and refined circuitry combine to achieve pristine, neutral audio capture that fully supports the high resolution and extended frequency response of Hi-Res Audio. With a well-defined low-mid range and clear, open sounding highs it is possible to capture the natural nuances of human voices, environmental sounds, musical instruments, and more.

Narrow frontal directivity and smooth off-axis response

An advanced microphone capsule and acoustic tube form a precise phase interference system that attenuates pickup from the sides and rear consistently over the entire frequency range. Ideal off-axis characteristics based on exceptional super-cardioid directivity allow focused, natural sounding pickup from the front so that the desired sound is clearly captured and unwanted ambient noise is effectively attenuated while retaining smooth, natural overall response.

Stable response over a wide distance range

The microphone’s unique capsule and acoustic tube combination also minimises frequency and directivity variations at different recording distances, ensuring consistently high audio quality in the widest possible range of recording situations. Equally stunning sound is captured whether the microphone is on the camera, on a boom, or in any other type of studio installation.

Circuit design for high quality and low noise

Top-quality film capacitors and metal film resistors are used in the signal path to maximise sonic clarity and accuracy. Conductive polymer aluminium solid capacitors are used in the power supply for high capacity and wide dynamic range with minimum circuit size. A machined aluminium chassis protects the capsule from external vibration while effectively blocking electrical noise for high sonic purity.

Compact without compromising performance

The extraordinary performance of the ECM-778 is packed into a compact unit that is only 176 mm (7 inches) in length thanks to ingenious acoustic tube design and miniature circuitry. It can be boom mounted for recording in tight spaces, allowing the operator to get close to the subject for the clearest possible audio capture. When camera mounted it stays out of the frame and won’t restrict camera manoeuvrability.

Lightweight and easy to handle

A machined aluminium shell and overall miniaturisation result in a total weight of just 102 g (3.6 oz). Boom-mounted handling is quick and easy, reducing stress on the operator during long recording sessions. It also adds minimal weight and size when camera mounted so that maximum camera mobility is maintained. This compact, lightweight, high-performance microphone is ideal for just about any shooting environment.

Low-cut switch

An accessible low-cut switch on the microphone body can be turned on to attenuate wind noise and vibration and facilitate clear, intelligible recording in any environment.

Two wind screens supplied

The ECM-778 comes with foam and fur type wind screens, giving the user a choice for optimal performance in indoor and outdoor environments. The foam wind screen is lightweight, easy to use, and a good choice for indoor settings where there is little wind. The fur type offers higher wind attenuation, making it an effective choice for windy outdoor situations.

Rugged reliability

The machined aluminium outer shell is lightweight while providing extra durability. Measures have also been taken to enhance resistance to humidity so that consistent, reliable performance is ensured in a wide range of challenging conditions.
