How to set up a multiple monitor configuration.

Follow these steps to connect an external monitor and set up a multiple monitor configuration in the operating system.

  1. Connect the external monitor to the computer via the VGA or HDMI® port.

    NOTE: Not all computers have an HDMI port. To see if your computer has an HDMI port, check the specifications. Manuals are posted on your model support page.

  2. Once the external monitor has been connected to the computer there are two different methods to proceed with the multiple monitor configuration.
  3. Method 1 - From the Devices charm in the New Windows User Interface:
    1. Point to (but do not click) the lower-right or top-right corner of the screen, and then click to select the Devices charm. Image

      NOTE: The Windows Logo + K key combination will also take you to the Devices screen.

    2. In the Devices screen, click Second screen. Image
    3. In the Second screen screen, click to select the desired configuration:
      • PC screen only - The main computer display will only display content.
      • Duplicate - Both the main computer display and the external monitor will display content.
      • Extended - The external monitor content will be extend from the main computer display.
      • Second screen only - The external monitor will only display content.

  4. Method 2 - From the Screen Resolution window in the traditional Windows Desktop interface:
    1. Right-click an empty space on the Desktop and, on the menu, click Screen resolution.
    2. In the Screen Resolution window, next to Multiple displays, click the down arrow and then click to select the desired configuration:
      • Duplicate these displays - Both displays will display the same content.
      • Extend these displays - The external monitor content will be extended from the main computer display.
      • Show desktop only on 1 - Display #1 will only display content.
      • Show desktop only on 2 - Display #2 will only display content. Image
    3. Once you have made all desired changes, click the Apply button and then OK button.
