How to eliminate the black borders on the top and bottom of the TV screen?

Sony® DVD players have a SCREEN SET UP section that is in the SET UP menu. This is where the TV TYPE settings can be made. TV TYPE selects the aspect ratio of the TV that is connected:

    • The 4:3 LETTERBOX setting should be selected when you connect a normal TV to the player. This will display a wide picture with black boxes displayed on the upper and lower portions of the screen.
    • The 4:3 PAN SCAN setting should be selected when you connect a normal TV to the player. This will display the wide picture on the whole screen with a portion automatically cut off.
    • The 16:9/4:3 WIDE MODE setting should be selected when you connect a wide screen TV to the player or when you connect a TV with WIDE MODE function to the player (This will display a wide picture with black boxes displayed on the upper and lower portions of the screen).

NOTE: Depending on the DVD software, 4:3 LETTERBOX may be selected automatically instead of 4:3 PAN SCAN and vice versa. In other words, if the DVD software that is being played on a normal TV contains a WIDE MODE version program, there is not a way to get rid of the black boxes above and below the picture. Some DVD discs will have both WIDE SCREEN and 4:3 PAN SCAN versions contained on the same disc.
