In which situations should each of the three RAW recording formats (uncompressed RAW, lossless compressed RAW, and compressed RAW) be used?

IMPORTANT: This article applies only to specific products and/or operating systems. Check Applicable Products and Categories for details.

Refer to the following to determine which RAW format to use when shooting images with your camera.

    • Uncompressed RAW:
      • Recommended when both high image quality and developing speed are required, as this format can be developed more quickly by development software than lossless compressed RAW.
    • Lossless compressed RAW:
      • Recommended when you want to record with image quality that's equivalent to uncompressed RAW but in a smaller file size.
    • Compressed RAW:
      • Recommended when you want to shoot continuously at maximum speed or limit the file size.

For additional information on the RAW format, refer to the About RAW data section of the Image Data Converter website.
