This article describes how to transfer images to an external HDD. To transfer images to a computer, refer to these articles:
Before you start
- When importing to a USB external Hard Disk Drive (HDD) for the first time, check the file system beforehand. If the file system is FAT32, image files of a size greater than 2 GB (long AVCHD videos, etc.) will be split into multiple files and imported due to the file system specifications. To avoid this, change the file system to NTFS.
- When importing XAVC S format videos, set the system file type to NTFS.
- If some of the movies are divided after importing movies to the computer, check the hard disk file system type.
WARNING! Changing the file system will delete all of the data on the external HDD. Back up necessary data to the computer's internal HDD or another location before changing the file system.
Follow the steps below to transfer images in the camera or memory card to a USB external HDD using the PlayMemories Home™ software.

- If the folders with the following names are present on the external HDD, the HDD may be recognized as Cameras and Media:
- AVCHD
- DCIM
- MP_ROOT
- PRIVATE
- MSSONY
- Folders with the file names above will be present on an external HDD used with Direct Copy. The external HDD will be recognized the same as a camera in the PlayMemories Home software, so it can be used the same way as with Camera Direct. Use it without making changes in situations such as when creating discs with Camera Direct.
- To prevent accidentally deleting data or unwanted writing of management data from the camera, you should use a separate external HDD as the location to import to with the PlayMemories Home software and the external HDD used with Direct Copy.
- When connecting an external HDD not used with Direct Copy, update the PlayMemories Home software to the latest version, register a folder on the external HDD and then restart the PlayMemories Home software.
