No picture on the TV when connected to an Audio/Video device using an analog cable
If you are using a composite or component cable to connect your TV directly to an Audio/Video device or through the audio system, the picture and sound may be frequently interrupted, or the edges of the picture may seem discolored.
Before you start
- If the TV screen doesn't show a picture when using an HDMI cable, you can refer to this article: There is no picture when using an HDMI connection.
- Make sure your TV has the latest system software installed. System software updates are available for certain LCD TVs.
- If you need model-specific information to complete any of these steps, check your product manual.
Manuals are posted on your model support page.
Note: The BRAVIA Connectivity Guide provides information on the available connection jacks on your A/V products.
Troubleshooting Steps
1. Check if the input setting of the TV is set to the input where the A/V device is connected.
- Make sure the TV and the A/V device (such as a Blu-ray Disc® player) are powered on.
- On the TV remote control, press the
INPUT button to cycle between the available inputs (examples are listed in the image below). Cycle through the inputs to the one the A/V device is connected to, and check if a picture appears on the TV screen.
- The image below shows an A/V device connected to the TV's input.
2. Check that the cable is firmly connected to the TV and the other devices and is not loose.
Confirm if the cable connecting your A/V device and the TV is firmly inserted at both ends.
3. Check the input setting on the audio system.
If your TV is connected to an A/V device (like a Blu-ray player) through an audio system (like an amplifier or theater stand), make sure the audio system is set to the input where the A/V device is connected. The image below shows a diagram of connections between an A/V device (1), audio system (2), and TV (3) using composite cables. The audio system shows Video as an Input in the display window.
- A/V device (Example: BD/DVD player)
- Audio system (Example: AV Amplifier)
- TV
Note: The way to switch inputs depends on your device. Follow your device’s instructions to select the correct input.
4. When using a composite cable (RCA), which has red, white, and yellow plugs, to connect your TV and A/V device through an audio system
5. Replace the cable if you have a spare cable.
Check whether the connecting cable causes this issue.
6. Check the input port of the TV to see if your TV has an alternative input port.
- Connect the cable to another input port on the TV. (If there is an alternative input port available on your TV)
- Press the
Input button on the TV's remote control to cycle the inputs. Cycle through the inputs to the one you connected the A/V device to in Step 1, and check if a picture appears on the TV screen.
7. Connect another A/V device to the TV.
If you have another A/V device, connect it to the same input port on the TV as the original A/V device, and then check if a picture appears on the TV screen.
8. Unplug the TV and the connected devices.
Sometimes, issues are caused by external factors, such as your network service or connected devices. Resetting these devices may help resolve the problem.
- Turn off the connected devices and the TV, and unplug the power cords.
- Keep them unplugged for two minutes.
- Plug the power cords back into the electrical outlet.
- Turn on the connected devices and the TV.
9. Perform a factory reset.
Hint: If you need to confirm your TV model type, refer to the How to check if your BRAVIA TV is a Google TV, Android TV, or other TV article.
Notes:
- If your A/V receiver has a convert function, activating it in the menu may be necessary when using more than one connection type in the hookup. The operating instructions supplied with your unit should indicate whether this function is present.
- If your A/V receiver is not capable of up-converting signals, make sure that the type of video cable being used between your source (DVD, cable box, etc.) and the A/V receiver is the same type of video cable that is being used between the A/V receiver and the television.
- A composite or S-Video signal that is up-converted to a component or HDMI signal may not display due to copyright protection encoded in the video signal.
The troubleshooting steps listed above should resolve your issue. If you have completed all of the steps and the issue is not resolved, service may be required.  Go to Product Repair.
