What is Bluetooth® wireless technology?
Bluetooth wireless technology is a technology that allows computers, phones, headsets, PDA's and other devices to wirelessly communicate over short distances (typically about 33 feet). Bluetooth wireless technology uses radio waves (in the 2.4 GHz range), and is designed to be a secure, low power and inexpensive way of connecting and exchanging information between devices without the need for wires or cables to link devices together.
What I need in order to connect to a Bluetooth wireless technology enabled device?
In order for Bluetooth wireless technology enabled devices to communicate with one another, the Bluetooth wireless technology enabled devices must communicate in the same language also known as a profile. A Bluetooth wireless technology profile is a specification that defines the minimum requirements that the Bluetooth wireless technology enabled device must support in a specific usage scenario. Compatibility and operation between Bluetooth wireless technology enabled devices may vary. The following describes the profiles supported by the Bluetooth Utility preloaded on VAIO® notebook computers.
Dial-Up Networking Profile (DUN) | Enables you to establish a dial-up Bluetooth wireless technology connection to the Internet or other networks with a mobile telephone or similar device. |

FAX Profile (FAX) | Enables you to establish a Bluetooth wireless technology connection with a mobile telephone or similar device to send or receive a fax. |
LAN Access Profile (LAP) | Enables you to establish a Bluetooth wireless technology connection with a LAN access point to access the services of a LAN using PPP. |
Serial Port Profile (SPP) | Enables communication with a device through a virtual serial port configured for Bluetooth wireless technology connection. This can be used for printers and printer adapters with PDA's, using a different method from HCRP or ActiveSync. |
Human Interface Device Profile (HID) | Allows connections to wireless mice, keyboards and other input devices. |
Hardcopy Cable Replacement Profile (HCRP) | Enables printing with a printer driver. |
File Transfer Profile (FTP) | Enables you to browse folders on a wireless device and transfer files to and from the local device. |
Object Push Profile (OPP) | Allows business card data to be exchanged with a wireless device. |
Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) | Allows audio data to be exchanged between wireless headsets and other audio devices, as well as allowing high-quality music playback. |
Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) | Is designed to provide a standard interface to control A/V equipment. |
Generic Audio/Video Distribution Profile (GAVDP) | Provides the basis for A2DP and AVRCP, the basis of the systems designed for distributing video and audio streams. |
Head Set Profile (HSP) | Profile used for handsfree headsets. Used when you want to have a voice conversation over your PC or connect to a mobile phone. |
Personal Area Networking Profile (PAN) | Supports IP base network. Allows connection to an ad-hoc or wired network via an access point. |
Basic Imaging Profile (BIP) | Allows image files to be sent and received after having been converted to a size suitable for the destination. In addition to being able to transfer image files, it allows camera shutters to be operated by remote control, as well as other offering other functionally. |
