aibo Makes Unusual Noises

Your aibo ™ robotic companion may produce unusual noises like revving, grinding, and ticking sounds when it moves its neck, plays around, or when the Scan QR code is triggered. Follow the steps below to minimize or get rid of the unusual noises and also to check if these noises are normal. Check if the noises still occur after each step.

    1. If aibo sits down and makes ticking sounds, tell it to "stop" or "never mind".
      • If aibo stops making sounds, the Scan QR code mode was probably triggered. This is normal operation.
      • Check the aibo Sits and Make Ticking Sounds article for more information.
    2. Restart aibo.
      1. Press and hold the power button on the back of aibo's neck for two seconds.

aibo power button and status LED

        • If you turn off aibo while it's on, it finishes its current action and the LED flashes in green and then goes out to indicate that the power is off.
        • If you turn off aibo while it's in sleep mode, the red status LED goes out to indicate that the power is off.
      2. Press and hold the power button for two seconds to turn on aibo.
        • If aibo stops making unusual sounds after restarting, the condition was most likely temporary.
    3. Set the Volume level to 0 (zero) on My aibo app, the official app for aibo:
      • Using your smartphone:
        1. Launch the My aibo app.
        2. Select My aibo.
        3. Select Settings.
        4. Select Volume, then set it to 0 (zero).
      • Using your computer:
        1. Launch the My aibo app.
        2. Under the tab menu, select Settings.
        3. Select Volume, then set it to 0 (zero).

Note: If the unusual sounds are gone after following the steps above, those sounds were most likely within the range of the specifications.

    4. Restart aibo again, then check if you can also hear aibo making sounds before it starts to move.
      • If you can hear the sounds before aibo starts to move, it's possible that the speaker malfunctioned. Contact our Customer Support for further assistance.
      • If you can hear the sounds even after aibo started moving, proceed to the next step.
    5. Check the distance where you can hear the unusual noises.
      • Sounds heard at close range to aibo, approximately 50.80 centimeters (20 inches), are normal operating sounds of the actuator that moves aibo.
      • If you can hear the unusual noises beyond 50.80 centimeters (20 inches), contact our Customer Support for further assistance.
