Event Information:

Sony’s design department, the Creative Center, will be holding the "CMF x MOOD" installation in Material ConneXion Tokyo in Roppongi, Tokyo. The installation will feature colors, materials, and finishes derived from the results of their global trend research, and the future predictions that were made from them.

Members of the Creative Center study color (C), material (M), and finish (F) and make proposals as to how they should be incorporated into future products and services, based on original insights. These properties, also referred to as “CMF,” are an important element to consider in order to offer products and services that resonate deeply with people. However, the same material can create different impressions depending on changing circumstances, such as social background. As such, Sony designers from Japan and overseas have come together to form a global team, and have continuously conducted trend analyses and field research into CMF.

This installation features the latest CMF themes derived by Sony designers, who made future predictions based on the results of their global trend research. Visitors can view “samples” of these themes as reflected in objects, videos, and user interfaces. There will also be a talk session by Sony designers.

CMF Themes manufacturing fascination

This theme sees true value not in the beauty that comes from uniformity, but in things that are varied, with a story to tell.
This form of expression, characterized by handmade textures and colors that have changed over time,
offers a sense of warmth and security.

resilient tech

An optimistic theme that sees people adapting flexibly to the difficult circumstances that have been in place
since the start of the pandemic in 2020, using technology and innovative solutions.
This form of expression combines beauty and functionality.

coded poetry

This theme sees people reclaiming their connection with nature, and realizing harmony and balance.
This form of expression offers healing and peace by moving away from artificial colors and shapes,
and incorporating natural beauty.

energetic resonance

This theme sees various different ideas and individualities connecting together, with digital solutions offering a new kind of "oneness."
This form of expression is characterized by a worldview that combines the real with the digital,
depicted in vivid colors and fascinating effects.

The global pandemic has caused some trends to accelerate or decelerate far beyond what anyone imagined, while also creating new trends. We will use the trend predictions we have been able to glean through our creative sensibility as Sony designers, to explore the future direction of CMF when it comes to products and services.
