In 1946, Masaru Ibuka, Akio Morita and more than twenty others established
the Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation). This was where Sony started.
Cherishing the spirit of challenge to "do what has never been done before," Sony has created innovative products, while expanding its business by entering many different fields, including semiconductors, financial services, movies, music, and games.
It's now grown into a global corporate group that spans across a variety of industries.

Developing products that surprise the world

Ever since our founding in 1946, we've been launching products and services that are the ultimate in sound, images, and communication, and offering products and services that maximize reality, real-time, and remote experiences. In the medical field, we've also been contributing to people's health by making use of our long-cultivated imaging, display, and mechatronics technologies. We've also started working toward creating new emotion in new fields that haven't been in our business areas before.

Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita established Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo on the third floor of the Shirokiya Department Store in Nihombashi, Tokyo.

Imaging & Sensing Solutions

Challenge the limits of image quality and sensing

The Imaging & Sensing Solutions business dates back to 1955, when Sony successfully commercialized radio embedded with Japan's first transistor. We also worked on CCDs from early on-leading the global image sensor market. Drawing upon our comprehensive technological strength from design and development through production, in 2020, we also successfully commercialized the world's first image sensor with AI processing functionality.

Find and develop talented artists

We founded CBS/Sony Records in 1968 as a joint venture with the American firm CBS, and took over CBS Records in 1988. Since then, we've continued to expand our music production business-making EMI Music Publishing a wholly-owned subsidiary in 2018, and gaining a leading position worldwide.

In 1991, the company was renamed Sony Music Entertainment.

Seizing opportunities of financial liberalization and deregulation, we've created new financial businesses that are not bound by existing frameworks. Sony Life Insurance offers tailor-made life insurance plans by Lifeplanner Sales Specialists through advanced consulting. Sony Assurance connects with customers directly via the Internet and telephone without going through agents. Sony Bank entered the industry with a business model that uses the Internet to free users from time and space constraints. SFG wants to be a financial group that helps each and every person achieve their dreams and peace of mind, by staying close to people and using the power of technology to build a society in which people feel uniquely enriched.

We entered the life insurance business in 1979, the non-life insurance business in 1998, the banking business in 2001, and the nursing care business in 2014.

Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) 's global operations encompass motion picture production, acquisition, and distribution, television production, acquisition, and distribution, television networks, digital content creation and distribution, operation of studio facilities, and development of new entertainment products, services and technologies. Sony Pictures Television operates dozens of wholly-owned or joint-venture production companies around the world. SPE’s Motion Picture Group production organizations include Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems, TriStar Pictures, 3000 Pictures, Sony Pictures Animation, Stage 6 Films, AFFIRM Films, Sony Pictures International Productions, and Sony Pictures Classics. Create the most exciting entertainment in the world

We established the company in 1993, and launched the PlayStation® the following year. In November 2020, we released the PlayStation®5, a video game console that provides an immersive experience using the latest technology. The PlayStation™ Network has more than 100 million monthly active users.*1
