XR Catch

Inclusive game of catch (2023)

XR Catch is an inclusive design initiative—an effort to broaden design perspectives and create new value—inspired by workshops with lead users, including people with disabilities and older adults. At the origin of the project was a visually impaired parent with a heartfelt wish: "I want to play catch with my son."
The XR Catch system enables players to throw a virtual ball back and forth in quick, engaging rhythm, guided by a sequence of three sounds that help them anticipate and "catch" the ball. The inclusive game fosters communication and fun, regardless of age or physical ability. To broaden accessibility and expand the scope of the experience beyond face-to-face games of catch, the project team also developed a remote version that lets users toss the ball around from wherever they are.
