Compelling Material Storytelling
- A dialogue with materials for the future: Outro -
Original Blended Material, a paper material developed by Sony, was featured in the exhibition INTERNI MATERIAE held during the international design event Milan Design Week, where it took the form of furniture and display fixtures.
The exhibition generated more than just astonishment at the material and furniture themselves. A wide range of visitors including designers, architects, corporate insiders, and students could be seen engaging in conversations inspired by the material. The story behind the material created dialogue about the future of manufacturing.
From packaging to furniture and even a generator of dialogue, we explore the new possibilities for Original Blended Material revealed through the exhibition.

It would be exciting to see, as the next development, the creation of new materials being tested on a larger scale through international collaboration. A partnership between Japan and Italy, for example, could surely lead to projects that are shared more broadly rather than remaining within a single geographic region. There are common challenges that both countries could help address together. Both Italy and Japan have strong traditions connected to design, sustainability, and paper, but they approach the material in different ways. Bringing these perspectives together could open new ways of thinking about sustainability.

I often think of Sony as a high-tech company, but this project shows a more human and hands-on side of innovation.
This is an expression of high-touch and of fantastic material and fantastic research on materials, with implications from a sustainable point of view.
Seeing how bamboo, sugarcane fibers, and recycled paper can be transformed into this new material was inspiring.
So, this is the first step for sustainability. If we want to propose a new sustainable world, we need to change the way we make materials.

I was really pleased with Sony’s willingness to explore a new way of approaching design. It is powerful to see a major technology company question itself and choose a different path, one that could serve as an example for other companies.
And as a young designer, I have so much hope after seeing Sony’s exhibition.

We live in a digital era. What we sometimes miss as humans is materiality: the feeling of touching, the feeling of smelling, the feeling of seeing the world with our hands.
So to me, it's really impressive to see an exhibition in which a material can be touched, can be seen, can be really felt, like smelling and experiencing with your senses.
It's the feeling of touching something. So it means really experiencing the world with your hands.
Normally we are really full of pictures, full of images. Now I don't see any images, I can just feel. I can have the feeling with my body and that's really amazing.
And it's not like Instagrammable, let's say. It's really about experiencing something through your senses.

I think that, after so many years, the world continues to embrace recycling, and this is extremely important. We need to keep moving in this direction. It's not about following fashion or a trend; it's about something that continues to evolve and remain relevant over time. Every year, and even every moment, new ideas and possibilities emerge. Especially now with Sony working on projects like this, it's truly fantastic.
It's not about a company producing home furniture or a specific type of product. We're talking about a high-end technology company, and that makes it even more interesting. It shows that sustainability and innovation can go hand in hand, which is very positive.
So, we keep moving forward, continuing our research into new materials, embracing recycling, and always looking for new possibilities. Brands like Sony are helping to spread these ideas by collaborating with designers to create new products, objects, and experiences that can contribute to a better future.

For me, it is exciting to see a large company like Sony, within its research division, exploring materials that can be used within the home. Knowing that we can bring such materials into the spaces and materials we live with every day—and that they can be recycled or adapted over time—is very inspiring.
Ultimately, I believe this is the direction we all need to move toward: the search for more sustainable solutions.
