Michael Jackson's Catalog Reaches New Heights Following Record-Breaking Michael Biopic

This year, Sony Music continued to expand the reach of Michael Jackson's catalog around the world in support of the biopic, Michael. In part, thanks to the film's global success, streams of Jackson's music, whose catalog is co-owned by Sony Music Group ("SMG"), experienced one of the largest surges of his career, reaching roughly four times pre-release levels. Streams spiked over the film's opening weekend, with momentum building from there as Jackson went on to post his best streaming week ever.

The excitement carried directly through to the charts: Thriller re-entered the Billboard 200 and marked its 500th week on Billboard's Top Album Sales chart, a milestone only a handful of albums have ever reached, while Jackson became the #1 streaming artist in the world, topping the Billboard Artist 100 chart for the first time in his career. Four different Jackson songs, "Billie Jean," "Human Nature," "Beat It" and "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," re-entered the Hot 100 simultaneously for the first time in his career, all of which were featured on the companion album for the film.

Michael: Songs From the Motion Picture was released in support of the film and featured 13 songs spanning Michael Jackson's entire catalog, from The Jackson 5 to The Jacksons to his chart-topping solo success with Off the Wall and Thriller. The album was released across all formats, with the 2-LP vinyl edition offered in several color variants for collectors and fans.

These milestones were fueled by SMG's teams, whose behind-the-scenes expertise and creative efforts activated and engaged longtime fans alongside those newly discovering Michael Jackson's music. This is a testament to how a historic catalog, paired with a cultural moment, can reach a new generation of listeners while deepening its connection with lifelong fans. It's this combination of world-class talent and the stewardship of iconic catalogs that continue to drive growth across SMG's business.

Michael surpassed $1 billion at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing biopic of all time. The film's success demonstrates the enduring legacy of Michael Jackson and his music's resonance with all generations.
