The Sony Creative Science Award (SCSA) is Sony's annual CSR program in Singapore. This year marks the 22nd anniversary of this largest toy-making competition in Singapore, with more than 4,300 toys submitted by 5,584 students from 87 primary schools. The 2019 award ceremony cum exhibition was held on 7 November and officiated by Ms Indranee Rajah, Minister in Prime Minister's Office and 2nd Minister for Finance and Education.
SCSA serves a platform for students between the ages of 7-12 to learn about science and creativity through hands-on experience of creating their own toy, with guidance from teachers. Besides the competition, students and teachers had the opportunity to attend workshops on design thinking and toy-making. A special activity booklet was also given out to students to ignite their interest in toy creation. This CSR program helps to create greater awareness of the Sony brand especially among the young and at the same time, it allows Sony to contribute to the local community through education. Every year, positive feedback is received from the students and teachers, and SCSA has now become one of the most anticipated activities in the Primary School calendar.
In conjunction with SCSA 2019, the Sony Science Program-MESH Workshop was held for the winning SCSA students. Guided by 12 Sony volunteers, 21 students aged between 9 to 12 years old had the opportunity to have hands-on with MESH. This year, to make it more interesting, the students took part in a F1 track challenge, where they had to design a vehicle incorporating MESH tags, and navigate the vehicle on a race track built by Sony volunteers. All of them had a fun time learning about MESH and taking part in the challenge.
