Politecnico di Milano
Design Workshop Week 2026

Following previous workshop experiences, the head of Creative Center, Daisuke Ishii, held a workshop as a Visiting Professor at Politecnico di Milano School of Design. Together with several designers, he conducted a workshop themed "Evolution and Expansion of Furniture for the Future." Building on previous years' theme, this year's program explored new possibilities for furniture through the lens of entertainment—focusing on experiences and interactions. Over the one-week workshop, internationally diverse students studying a wide range of fields—including Integrated Product Design and Digital & Interaction Design—took part in the program. Starting from a UI/UX perspective and connecting product design through to branding, the teams developed many proposals for user experiences that bring new value to everyday life.

Workshop outputs

Grand Award: omono
A proposal that transforms your shower time into an inspirational experience. Inspired by the anecdote of Archimedes—that he discovered the principle of buoyancy in the bath—the project explores how inspiration can be sparked and remembered through a rich, multisensory experience incorporating scent and staging. Its cohesive branding, distinctive concept, and fully realized world-building were highly praised.
Visual Design Award: Mira
A design proposal connecting dreams and reality. As a daily ritual, users record their dreams, which are visualized and archived using generative AI—allowing them to revisit and share these experiences. A consistent visual language—centered on a signature blue, handwritten logotype, and sharp symbol—extends from UI to presentation materials. The project offers a fresh UX that elevates the abstract theme of dreams into a contemporary form of entertainment.
Experience Design Award*1 ①: Public Secrets
A proposal for an installation that transforms the time spent waiting for a train at a station into an experience. The theme is "confession." Personal thoughts are gently shared with others: when spoken into a hemispherical device, words appear as bubble-like visuals that travel across the floor and emerge in the line of sight of waiting passengers. Both its originality and the sophistication of its working mockup stood out.
Product Design Award: solus
Addressing compact living environments where work and relaxation overlap, this project proposes a "personal space without physical walls." By combining directional noise cancellation and projection, it defines space through sound and visuals. Its lighting-inspired form adapts to different scenarios via attachments, functioning as a ceiling light or floor lamp. The coherence from internal design to graphics and packaging was commended.
Strategy Design Award: Kroma
A modular lighting system that children can assemble like building blocks, with colors and effects controlled via an app. Beyond the joy of creation, it enables families to preserve memories tied to moments of growth. The design was recognized for integrating both playful interaction and a meaningful framework for memory-making.
Interactive Design Award*2 ①: OPERA
Focusing on the reality of eating at one's desk due to busy schedules or limited space, this project reimagines the desktop environment. Surrounding displays provide contextual information during work, and ambient graphics gently indicate the passage of time when focus deepens. The concept—framing the central desktop and peripheral displays as an "orchestra"—is particularly elegant.
Interactive Design Award*2 ②: HABITA
A training device that promotes balance through dynamically shifting surface textures. By altering patterns, it evokes tactile sensations—such as the feeling of lying in grass—engaging the body’s sensory perception. The proposal suggests strong potential for further exploration of interaction made possible through physical transformation.
Experience Design Award*1 ②: nest
An experience that allows users to sense the presence of a distant loved one through a sofa. Heartbeat and body temperature are translated into vibration, lighting, and warmth, enabling a form of nonverbal communication. Its refined execution—from logo to color scheme—demonstrates a deeply cohesive and sensitive design approach.

*1 Experience Design Award: Selected for the uniqueness and depth of the experience design.

*2 Interactive Design Award: Selected for the intrinsic appeal of interaction design.
