An animated introductory movie of the short science fiction story “You or You.”
A large ship is traveling over a blue sea. Numerous floating mobile houses called “floating habitats” are seen afloat around it. A float attached to the end of a fishing line is cast into the ocean. A person wearing a hat is fishing on a floating habitat. There is a tug on the fishing line, and the reel is wound to pull in the catch. A demistate can be seen in the distance. The scene zooms in on the inside of the demistate. The main character Ichiu is walking down a hallway. He puts his hands against a wall. A freshly hatched butterfly can be seen on the other side of the wall. Ichiu looks to his side and finds Yori, his friend from childhood, sitting on a bench. Ichiu sits next to Yori. When Ichiu touches Yori’s hand, the butterfly flies away.

“Yori, let’s go to Tokyo. Toward an azure land.”

Ichiu and Yori leave the demistate in the dark of the night and travel on a boat in a rain. When they reach Tokyo, they run through the city hand-in-hand. They pass by a café where the customers project a hologram of an ancillary, an artificial being crafted around a virtual personality, into the air from a device at hand. They meet a journalist called Kei, who shelters them in a small room of his house. Ichiu is in a dark room alone. He starts up a device, and a hologram of an ancillary that bears a close resemblance to Yori appears.

“Tell me my name.”

“Yori.”

When Ichiu touches the cheek of the ancillary, Yori enters the room and overlaps with the face of the ancillary. Ichiu is startled.

“Hey, Ichiu, tell me more about yourself.”

The ancillary talks to Ichiu, but Ichiu is now focused on Yori and the voice recedes. Ichiu is standing on the shore of Tokyo Bay. He walks toward the shore and turns on his device. His ancillary appears.

“Thank you for our time together.”

“It was my pleasure.”

A demistate and Tokyo are depicted in contrast. The image of Tokyo is a mirage flickering on the horizon.

“Toward an azure land.”
