Title
ONE DAY, 2050 / Sci-Fi Prototyping
Sony Design 60th
WELL-BEING, 2050 “Resilience.”
Explanatory note

An animated introductory movie of the short science fiction story “Resilience.” The main character Satsuki is riding a circular board and flying through the air.

Narration (Satsuki’s voice):

“We met playing Air Race. My only experiences with love had been in VR.”

Explanatory note

Satsuki is playing Air Race with a woman in a white outfit. The two glide through a pale blue space.

Narration (Satsuki’s voice):

“All ideal partners, chosen by AI therapist Ophelia, but nothing ever worked out.”

Explanatory note

Satsuki is standing in front of a glass-walled café on a street corner. He seems to be waiting for someone. He is wearing a long gray shirt and a pair of boots.

Narration (Satsuki’s voice):

“That’s why I thought maybe this one would. A real relationship, with a partner I picked.”

Explanatory note

Satsuki sees Akira walking up to him and greets her with a shy smile.

Narration (Satsuki’s voice):

“I knew from the moment I first saw her that she and I were destined to be together.”

Explanatory note

Satsuki and Akira are having a conversation in the café. They seem to be having a good time. But then suddenly Satsuki looks startled and stares blankly into space. People walk past the café window. Satsuki is sitting alone at a table.

Narration (Satsuki’s voice):

“But one day she disappeared.”

Explanatory note

The scene changes to Satsuki’s room. Plants and flowers placed by a window are all withered. Satsuki sits up in bed. He walks toward the window and touches a withered flower. A wearable device on his wrist responds. He puts in his contact lenses, and AI therapist Ophelia appears in the figure of a woman.

Ophelia’s voice:

“Satsuki Kureshima. You have been enrolled in the Ministry of Health’s resilience program. This is a role-playing session. It will help you revisit your past mistakes.”

Explanatory note

The café scene where Satsuki and Akira were meeting is recreated. Satsuki looks back over his shoulder, and Ophelia gently pushes Satsuki’s back.

Narration (Satsuki’s voice):

“I don’t know what’s in store for me. But I can see Akira again. That’s all I want.”
