A young woman with long red hair, Emily Jones, sits in a chair with a steering wheel and pedals playing a racing video game. A screen on the back of her chair reads, “Australia, E. Jones” with a picture of her face. Text appears along the bottom of the view. In the lower left-hand corner, the “Rated E for Everyone” symbol appears in black and white. In the center at the top of the view, white text reads:

ON SCREEN TEXT: Captured on PS5™. Internet connection required for game footage shown. Game progression required to access most vehicles.

EMILY
“GT Sophy is a machine learning intelligence, but it’s starting to look more like a human.”

In the game, several race cars drive along a dirt road, kicking up dust. Behind Jones' car is another car with a tag that reads, "Sophy Bleue." Now two women appear in half moons video chat windows on a red background. Text beside the woman on the left reads, "Annika Hansteen-Izora. Creative Technologist." Text beside the woman on the right reads, "Hana Jacobsen. Designer and Artist.”

ANNIKA
“As a creator, AI is so inspiring. It's like a partner to practice your craft.”

As Hana speaks in Japanese, subtitles appear.

HANA
“It's a powerful way to collaborate and learn new skills.”

ANNIKA
“Totally! That's what's so cool about this project.”

HANA
“Watching world class drivers compete with a powerful AI shows you how it can actually change the game.”

Footage from the game shows Sophy Bleue's race car speeding down a track. Text appears beside it.

Now a man with glasses in a black turtleneck interviews against a black background. Text appears beside him.

ON SCREEN TEXT: Michael Spranger
COO, Sony AI

MICHAEL
“The best driver in Gran Turismo for the last 20 years or so was human.”

On a stage lit a neon blue with several screens setup along the wall, several racers sit in racing simulator cockpit. Competition rankings appear on two of the screens. Text appears.

In the game, a pair of race cars labeled “Sophy Violette” and “Sophy Rouge” race, Sophy Rouge is ahead.

MICHAEL
“GT Sophy is an AI agent trained to race against the best Gran Turismo drivers in the world.”

A split view shows the driver's seat of a car driven by a human competitor, Tomoaki Yamanaka, and the driver's seat of Sophy Rouge's car. Text appears between the views.

MICHAEL
“The best possible outcome of this is actually to inspire the humans.”

Now text appears as a man in a grey long sleeve t-shirt, Kazunori, interviews against a black background.

ON SCREEN TEXT: Kazunori Yamauchi
President, Polyphony Digital Inc.
Gran Turismo Series Producer

As he speaks in Japanese, subtitles appear.

KAZUNORI
“For an AI like GT Sophy, winning races against a human driver is not very hard.”

Kazunori drives from the seat of a game simulator. A split view shows two drivers racing, the left labeled “Human” and the right labeled “Sophy”.

KAZUNORI
“What's difficult is going beyond that. For instance, thinking about what human beings are moved by and what they feel is fair.”

Now Emily Jones races in a competition, then interviews.

EMILY
“Driving a car on the limit is a high speed game of chess. You have to outsmart your opponent.”

A first-person view of a driver's seat shows Sophy Bleue racing Emily on a sunny track.

ON SCREEN TEXT: Gran Turismo Sport: Captured on PS4™. Game progression required to access most vehicles.

EMILY
“With Sophy, they race you so hard, but they also uncover lines that you're not expecting.”

MICHAEL
“The agent learns by exploring the environment, using reinforcement learning, and getting a feedback signal, whether it's doing good or bad. So it has to learn from its own experiences.”

Old footage of GT Sophy’s former races shows the AI agent learning how to drive on a track, and making a lot of mistakes like crashing into other vehicles and going very slowly. Next Michael and Kazunori sit together looking at a laptop. Another computer displays codes scrolling across the screen.

KAZUNORI
“It's impossible for a human to write tens of thousands of new rules to cover every single situation that could happen.”

In older footage of early GT Sophy races, a fleet of identical white vehicles veer around a curve, crashing into each other and sending up clouds of dust. A programmer looks from a stream of AI code to a GT Sophy practice race.

KAZUNORI
“But GT Sophy is able to learn new skills with each race, and adjust future reactions based on those experiences.”

Emily is back at the World Finals, racing against GT Sophy in Gran Turismo.

EMILY
“Ultimately Sophy will change the way that you prepare for races. If you're sitting next to a teammate who is beating you constantly, it forces you to learn from them and learn what they're doing and improve.”

Kazunori watches the race with Michael, then interviews.

KAZUNORI
“Before GT Sophy, the conventional AIs couldn't really teach humans the best ways to drive on the track. And that's what makes GT Sophy feels sort of human-like when you're racing against it.”

A man's jaw drops as he watches the racers. Audience members applaud and cheer. Michael interviews.

MICHAEL
“I'm incredibly excited for technology like GT Sophy to have a larger impact on the creation of games in general.”

The race nears the finish and a driver presses physical pedals as he races. In-game footage shows a crowd of cars racing as fireworks burst in the air beside them, GT Sophy has won the race.

MICHAEL
“Now we have this new technology and maybe in a few years all the agents that we have are going to be similar to GT Sophy.”

Now Annika and Hana re-appear in their half moon video chat.

HANA
“I feel like AI could make me a better player.”

ANNIKA
“And a better artist.”

HANA
“AI is the perfect co-pilot.”

ANNIKA
“The future of collaboration.”

Hana nods. Now the two black half-circles return on the red background. White text on the larger left dot reads:

White text on the right reads:

The view fades to a rainbow background that deepens to black. A chime sounds as white text appears in the center:
