ONE DAY, 2050 /
Sci-Fi Prototyping
Exhibit commemorating the 60th anniversary of Sony Design (2021)
Sci-Fi prototyping is a method used to examine what must be done now by backcasting from a future envisioned with the help of science fiction. Using the keywords of "2050," "Tokyo," and "romance," young Sony designers and science fiction writers held a series of workshops over a period of about six months to create four design prototypes and four short science fiction stories under the themes of "WELL-BEING," "HABITAT," "SENSE," and "LIFE." This project, held in collaboration with the WIRED Sci-Fi Prototyping Lab and four science fiction writers—Taiyo Fujii, Miyuki Ono, Haruka Mugihara, and Itsuki Tsukui—was intended to encourage designers to continue thinking from their unique perspectives in an increasingly uncertain and complex society.
