Sony Group OHS Initiatives
Sony has implemented occupational health and safety initiatives since its founding, including prior to the passing of Japan’s Industrial Safety and Health Act in 1972. It established the Sony Group Global Policy on Occupational Health & Safety in the late 1990s.
With the ultimate objective of ensuring zero injuries and zero illness, Sony sets out a Sony Group Global OHS Medium-Term Plan every three years and continues its activities on a group-wide basis.
Sony Group, which engages in diverse businesses, will strengthen coordination with various business domains to address wide-ranging challenges relating to occupational health and safety and will implement initiatives in an even more active and sustainable manner.
Global OHS Initiatives
Promotion of OHSMS Activities and Continuation of Integrated Group-wide ISO 45001 Certification
Sony operates an OHS management system based on the ISO 45001 international standard, covering all people working in the Sony Group worldwide. It has also been working to obtain integrated ISO 45001 certification, beginning with manufacturing, logistics and R&D sites around the world and then proceeding on to other sites.
・Note regarding temporary suspension of integrated group-wide ISO 45001 certification
In response to a significant incident related to manufacturing equipment at one site of a Sony Group-affiliated company on April 13, 2026, the ISO certification institution Bureau Veritas Japan Co., Ltd. (BVJ) carried out a special investigation. The results of this investigation found serious areas of non-conformity in the operation of occupational health and safety management systems, and the integrated group-wide ISO 45001 certification of Sony Group Corporation and Sony Group-affiliated companies has been placed under temporary suspension from August 6, 2026 to November 5, 2026 (provisional).
At the time of the publishing of this report, Sony is proceeding with necessary corrective action and the formulation of measures to prevent reoccurrence, based on the findings by BVJ.
Promoting Occupational Health
Awareness of the importance of water and hygiene (WASH)*1 has risen in recent years. As part of its occupational health promotion activities to achieve its group-wide OHS Medium-Term Plan targets, Sony has set a target of ensuring sustainable and safe water for employees. In fiscal year 2025, it carried out surveys at applicable sites*2 to ascertain the current situation regarding water and hygiene, and confirm that sufficient safe water is being provided to employees at all applicable sites.
- *1According to the World Health Organization (WHO), WASH is an acronym of water, sanitation and hygiene and refers to the fact that access to safe drinking water, sanitation facilities (such as toilets) and hygiene practices are all extremely important to human health and wellbeing.
- *2Sites with ISO 45001 certification
Reduction of Accidents Caused by Unsafe Behavior
Global occurrences of OHS incidents have been trending downward each year in terms of both numbers of incidents and lost workdays, but Sony is still working to further reduce risks. An analysis of OHS incidents in all regions and business entities has prompted Sony to identify collisions, slips, trips and falls due to unsafe behavior as a global priority due to the fact that the number of such incidents remains especially high. Accordingly, action to further reduce the number of slips, trips and falls is being promoted globally in the OHS Medium-Term Plan for fiscal years 2024 to 2026.
Reducing Accidents Caused by Chemical Substances and Machinery
Sony’s R&D facilities and manufacturing sites use a wide variety of chemical substances and machinery, and reducing the risks associated with that use is an important determinant of the level of occupational safety and health. Sony is establishing a risk assessment system that will not just identify hazards relating to chemical substances, machinery, and work modes, but will also check that legal requirements are met. In particular, it is strengthening management of chemical substances in line with revisions to the Industrial Safety and Health Act in Japan moving toward independent management of chemical substances.
At Sony, internal site audits and corporate audits by Headquarters and Regional Safety Offices are also carried out to ascertain the state of chemical substance management at its sites. As one initiative to reduce accidents caused by chemical substances, substances identified as hazardous process chemicals in the Industry Focus Process Chemical List* have been included in the list of substances that require management with the aim of promoting thorough risk assessment.
- *The Industry Focus Process Chemical List is a list of process chemicals for which risk management is considered necessary. It is compiled by the Responsible Business Alliance (RBA), a coalition that aims to create responsible supply chains (including procurement and production). Sony is a member of the RBA.
Activities of the Sony HQ OHS Office
Monitoring
To achieve the Vision Zero goals, the HQ OHS Office regularly collects information on the occurrence of occupational accidents and illnesses at Sony Group companies and sites, and information on the OHS activities carried out there. To collect information, Sony holds regular meetings with Safety Officers to share examples of good practices and events in the region, and this information is used in problem solving. Regional conferences at each Safety Office are hosted by safety officers and attended by representatives from sites in the region to gather opinions from individual workplaces and share about any issues. In addition to regularly including information on good practices collected by the HQ OHS Office in in-house newsletters, each time a significant incident occurs or information on an accident comes to light, the office also instructs that measures be implemented to prevent a recurrence.
Global Audit System
At Sony’s sites, internal audits, corporate audits and external audits are employed to examine the effectiveness of OHS management systems. Internal audits are conducted for sites to examine the effectiveness of their own OHS management system in order to continuously improve the system and ensure that occupational accidents are prevented.
The HQ OHS Office and Safety Offices carry out corporate audits to examine compliance with corporate rules. A third-party certification body conducts external audits to provide confirmation of the effectiveness of the OHS management system. These three types of audits combine to determine the effectiveness of the Sony Group OHS management system as a whole.
The HQ OHS Office is responsible for training corporate auditors and examining the effectiveness of audits carried out at the regional level. Once it has established an in-house auditor system and determined auditor qualification requirements, it conducts periodic auditor training to enhance auditing skills.
Management Review
The HQ OHS Office facilitates annual management reviews conducted by the Top Management in charge of Human Resources and General Affairs based on each region’s reports to evaluate OHS activities; the occurrence of occupational accidents and illnesses in each region; the level of achievement of activity goals; and adherence to laws and regulations. It was also confirmed that no violations of laws and regulations took place in fiscal year 2025.
Management comments set out in management reviews are reflected in the OHS Medium-Term Plan, and are fed back to each regional Safety Office and to sites in each region.
OHS Training
Sony provides regional education tailored to its businesses in each region. In addition, the HQ OHS Office holds training sessions for internal auditors to improve the skills of auditors in each region.
In Japan/East Asia, the Japan/East Asia Regional Safety Office provides group training to ensure that OHS managers and employees of business sites have the required skills.

Occupational Health and Safety Initiatives by Region/Business
Occupational Health and Safety Initiatives in Japan/East Asia
In the Japan/East Asia region, in order to further reduce workplace accidents and create even safer, healthier workplaces, Sony engages in ongoing health and safety-related activities that consider regulatory trends and on-site challenges.
In fiscal year 2025, 7 out of the 14 accidents caused by unsafe behavior that led to absence from work were due to slips, trips and falls, and a trend of longer absences from work was observed, particularly among employees aged 50 and older. Sony sees these areas as priorities to be addressed and is working to further reduce industrial accidents through efforts such as raising awareness of accidents caused by slips and falls, implementing measures to prevent recurrence, carrying out horizontal sharing of examples of good practices, and requesting that external contractors cooperate in ongoing safety activities.
In addition, in line with the legal mandating of heat stroke prevention measures under revisions to Japan’s Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health, Sony held special heat stroke prevention seminars featuring specialist information from occupational physicians. By deepening employees’ understanding of the regulatory background and specific actions required at work sites, Sony is working to ensure the establishment of highly-effective heat stroke prevention measures at its sites.
Sony also redefined its existing regional meeting, the Japan/East Asia Regional OH&S Conference, by making it into a platform for further promoting practical exchanges of information and knowledge, together with problem solving. The name has also been changed to the Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Forum. In addition to presentations of positive examples of health and safety initiatives from work sites in Japan, the forum features lectures from external experts and participation-based workshops, creating opportunities for interaction and learning directly linked to on-site realities.
In terms of chemical substance management, with the move toward independent management of chemical substances, an expert from the Japan Industrial Safety & Health Association was invited to speak at a seminar on chemical substance management. By deepening understanding of approaches to risk assessment and key aspects of chemical management, Sony is working to further strengthen the chemical substance management systems at its sites. Furthermore, Sony has included compliance with revised legislation among corporate audit key measures and is monitoring the progress of initiatives across its sites.
Sony works to continuously enhance preparedness for earthquakes, fires, and other emergencies through initiatives including implementing online training covering initial responses and other measures in the event of an earthquake, safety confirmation training, and on-site drills for evacuating all people on site in the event of a fire.

Occupational Health and Safety Initiatives at the Pictures Segment
Emergency Response
At Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. (SPE), various health and safety activities were implemented as part of emergency preparedness. At SPE’s studios in Culver City, California, employees practiced putting out fires with a fire extinguisher under the guidance of the Fire Marshal Instructor and participated in fall protection and emergency ladder training. Other measures include utilizing a scissor lift outfitted with heat illness prevention equipment, and the development of the Protect SPE mobile app providing employees and visitors with information such as emergency preparedness guidance and emergency contact information.
Occupational Health and Safety Initiatives in the Game Segment
Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) strengthens its occupational health and safety management through improvements in governance, reporting, and employee engagement.
SIE implemented the occupational health and safety management system to ensure we continually improve our workplace safety.
Employee engagement remained a priority, supported by an in-house training module for all new starters, with strong completion rates and ongoing rollout. Plans are in place to update the module to maintain engagement and relevance.
SIE has 77 sites worldwide and is a key business unit within the Games and Network Services segment of the Sony Group. SIE’s location portfolio consists of office spaces, games development studios and one headphone manufacturing site based in California.
Global accident and injury reporting
SIE has recognized an opportunity to improve the tracking and monitoring of occupational illness and injury data by utilizing a standardized reporting mechanism. The project is currently under development with interdepartmental collaboration from both our EHS and HR teams. The aim is to support staff with a simplified universal reporting route, alert relevant teams, and trigger follow up responses including incident investigations to reduce risk, fulfilling internal and external reporting requirements and ensuring our employees are supported.
Legal Tracking Improvements
In the last financial year SIE has bolstered its legal tracking initiatives across 16 countries in both EMEA and APAC regions. Partnering with Anthesis, a consultancy firm with a network of local EHS experts, is enabling the centralized EHS team to better support smaller sites, fulfilling our H&S policy commitment to provide safe and healthy places of work for all employees, workers and visitors.
Stunt and Production Safety Policy
Part of the process of rendering realistic movements in video games that echo the flow of human movements involves mapping them in real life in one of our motion capture studios. Owing to the wide variety of scenarios and props mapped across our games portfolio, SIE has set a goal to introduce a standardized stunt and production safety policy and reevaluating accompanying risk assessments to reduce known hazards.
A key element of ISO 45001 is engaging employees, and at SIE we know that gaming is something our staff are passionate about. Using gaming themes, we created a training video for our main US and UK offices (whereas our offices in Japan participate in Sony’s HQ H&S training). The 4.5-minute OHS training module informed employees about building evacuation procedures, earthquake preparedness, fire safety, first aid, workplace hazards including slips and trips, electrical safety, and ergonomics and provided links to wellbeing resources.
This approach proved popular, over 90% of our employees who were assigned the training in fiscal year 2023 completed it and the feedback received was positive. The training is still assigned to all new starters and is now being rolled out in other EMEA countries. This year we are planning to update the training and owing to its popularity and compact format we will also be including Japan and APAC in the next version.

Major Causes of Injuries in Fiscal Year 2025
- Slips, trips and falls: 15 accidents (1 fewer than the previous fiscal year)
-
Collisions and stepping on sharp objects: 5 accidents (4 fewer than the previous fiscal year)
Caught by objects: 5 accidents: (same as the previous fiscal year)
Slips, trips and falls also accounted for a large number of accidents in fiscal year 2025. As such accidents often occur due to a lack of attention or during everyday activities, this is a global issue not restricted to the high-risk fields of R&D and manufacturing. Accordingly, Sony has set a medium-term target of continuously reducing slips, trips, falls and collisions, and is making global efforts aimed at improvement.
Note Regarding Figures in this Section (Occupational Health and Safety)
Effective October 1, 2025, Sony carried out a partial spin-off of the Financial Services business. Accordingly, in principle, targets, results, and individual initiatives included in this report have been compiled and presented based on continuing operations, excluding the Financial Services business. However, all results in this section (Occupational Health and Safety) include results relating to the Financial Services business covering the period up to September 30, 2025.
